Each week we track the 5 college hoop teams that I have determined will show a “positive return on investment” by season’s end. Last year’s Pos 5 came in at 62% ATS. A nice chunk of change come “March Madness.”
This year I have selected Cornell, Tenn., Siena, Minn. and the Cal. Bears. One of our Pos 5 members, the Big Red of Cornell, came “this close” to springing the biggest upset of the of the college hoop season…
They were actually ahead of top-ranked Kansas, in the final minute of play, Wed. night, before falling 71-66. They of course covered the 21 1/2 point spread.
That ATS win was part of the “5’s” 5-2 ATS record for the week. They came in 6-3 SU.
Cornell just could not overcome the play of Jayhawk’s star Sherron Collins. After the Big Red went ahead with 41 seconds remaining, Collins who had a career high 33 points, assisted on a game clinching 3 pointer.Kansas, despite shooting a dismal 36 percent, prevailed to garner their 52nd straight at home.
Another Pos 5 member, the Tennessee Volunteers won rather easily over the 49ers of Charlotte. The Vols were without starter Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams and Melvin Goins who combine to average 32.2 points, 14.7 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game. Coach Bruce Pearl suspended the four indefinitely after they were arrested Friday on gun and drug charges. The Vols, though suiting up only six scholarship players, held sway 88-71, to win both SU and ATS. It’s unlikely the four set down players will return by Sunday when Tennessee hosts No. 1 Kansas.
The Cal. Bears, despite being a 14 1/2 point favorite, lost to the Bruins of UCLA 76-75 in overtime. Cal’s strong suit, 3 point shooting, was among the missing, as they only shot 2 for 18 from beyond the arc.Cal, earlier in the week, made short work of the Stanford Cardinal as part of the Bears 1-1 record ATS and SU. Our other two Pos 5 members Minnesota and Siena combined to go 2-1 ATS and 3-1 SU.
On the year the Pos 5 are 36-22 (62%) ATS and 46-22 SU…We are looking at a $2,360 profit based on a $220 wager for each game.
Next week, we look to increase our bankroll as the Pos 5 play a total of 8 games.
May there be “nothing but net” for the rest of the season.
