Positive 5 2009–2010 Week 10

Each week we track the 5 college hoop teams that I have determined will show a “positive return on investment” by season’s end. This year I have selected Cornell, Tennessee, Minnesota, Siena and UNLV.

UNLV RebelsWhat’s going on here? After six straight winning weeks, the Pos 5 have lost for the second week in a row...I’m going to give them one more VCO week, then I might make some changes, as I did with the Cal Bears a couple of weeks ago; which incidentally is when the losing streak started. I replaced Cal with the UNLV Rebels, which are not doing much better. The Rebs were 2-0 SU this past week, but only 1-1 ATS.

Overall the Pos 5 came in at 6-3 SU and 3-4 ATS.

The Saints of Siena won both of their games by the same score, 66-58 and covered in both games, one vs Manhattan, the other vs St. Peters last night. This coming week, Siena has one game at Marist on Saturday.

Rebels & CowboysThe Rebels also have only one game this VCO week, on Wednesday, visiting the Cowboys of Wyoming.

The Minnesota Gophers failed to cover twice at home vs. Mich. St and Northwestern, to run their ATS losing streak to 4 losses in a row. They hit the road for a nationally televised game at Ohio. St. on Sunday. Minn. is one of the teams I am thinking of replacing, as they have lost more games ATS than they have won and are not playing Pos 5 ball of late.

The winners of six ATS games in a row, the Big Red of Cornell, won their only encounter this past week on Saturday at Columbia, by the score of 75-51. That was almost the same tally (74-53) in their victory at home vs. the same Lions of Columbia last week, in a “home and away” match up. Cornell takes on Harvard and Dartmouth next week. Both games in the confines of their home “gym.”

Volunteers of TennesseeAnother Pos 5 team that has “tanked” of late, the Volunteers of Tennessee, lost both of their games, SU and ATS. One at Georgia, one at home vs. Vanderbilt. The Vols will try to make amends this coming week while hosting the Florida Gators on Sunday, and at Baton Rouge on Thursday taking on LSU.

The Pos 5 dipped below 60% for the season, but still stand 47-34 ATS (58%) and 68-27 SU. They have only 7 games this next VCO week. Covering 6 of 7 will put them at 60% again.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed...and get back to our winning ways

Hoping for “nothing but net” until next week...
