National Wildlife Federation Certifies Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve As A Wildlife Habitat

Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve in Henderson, NV

February 11, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has recognized the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (2400 B Moser Dr.) as an official certified wildlife habitat site. The 100-acre preserve is home to thousands of migratory waterfowl and resident desert birds. It is located within the Kurt R. Segler Water Reclamation Facility and is staffed and programmed by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

NWF’s wildlife habitat certification program began in 1973, and since then more than 122,000 habitats have been certified nationwide. To become certified, a property must provide guidelines for making landscapes more hospitable to wildlife and provide the four basic elements that wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young.

“The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve is a fine example of environmental stewardship because it blends all the elements of a true wildlife habitat while meeting the educational and recreational needs of avid birders and residents of all ages,” said Jennifer Magby, Outdoor Recreation coordinator, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “For 12 years the preserve has served as a mini-refuge for wildlife, and this certification helps to validate the City’s efforts.”

According to the NWF, habitat restoration is critical in urban and suburban settings where commercial and residential development often encroaches on wildlife areas, limiting the availability of resources wildlife need to survive and thrive.

Home Pool Safety For the Parent, Day Care Provider

March 13 Workshop Provides Life-Saving Education

Heritage Park Aquatic Complex

February 9, 2010 – Henderson, NV – In anticipation for the summer swim season, parents and day care providers can learn about home pool safety in a workshop hosted by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “Home Pool Safety for the Parent/Day Care Provider” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 13, at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex, 310 S. Racetrack Rd. Participation is $25 per person (ages 14 and up), and includes a certificate of course completion. Register online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 136103-01) or at any City of Henderson recreation center.

City of Henderson aquatic staff will teach participants about sun and backyard pool safety. The workshop is designed to provide homeowners, apartment pool users, and day care professionals with the information and awareness they need to keep family members and guests in a safe aquatic environment.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, of all submersion incidents in 2008, 81 percent involved children age 4 or younger, and 66 percent of these incidents occurred in residential pools.

“Drowning is the leading cause of death of young children in Southern Nevada and what makes this especially tragic is that many if not all of these deaths can be prevented by adult supervision, proper barriers and fencing around the pool, ensuring children know how to swim, and making life jackets available for those who cannot swim,” said Angela Hester, Aquatics supervisor, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “This workshop will provide parents and day care providers with the knowledge they need to keep everyone—especially children—safe this swim season.”

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department hosts a variety of swimming lessons and pool safety workshops throughout the year. For additional information, call 267-4000 or visit cityofhenderson.com.
