United Way Presents a “Super Saturday”
Event Featuring FREE Tax Preparation, March 27

WHAT: With the IRS tax return filing deadline of April 15 rapidly approaching, United Way encourages southern Nevadans to file their taxes in advance, to avoid penalties and ensure a speedy refund. United Way’s “Earn It Keep It Save It” collaborative is offering FREE tax preparation services to those who earned less than $49,000 in 2009 at a “Super Saturday” event, supporting early e-filing.

WHEN:
          Saturday, March 27
          Open to the public, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

WHERE:
Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center
          1625 West Carey Rd. North
          Las Vegas, NV 89032

DETAILS: United Way’s “Earn It Keep It Save It” collaborative is continuing its valuable free tax preparation services, putting money back in the pockets of southern Nevadans. Taxpayers who earned less than $49,000 in 2009 can have their taxes prepared and filed at no charge by an IRS-certified volunteer and may be eligible for an EITC refund of up to $5,657. Tax preparers are specially trained to identify credits available to low-income individuals and families, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

EITC is the largest federal cash assistance program for low-income taxpayers and helps to lift more families out of poverty than any other government program. Tax returns will be prepared at no cost at any of the more than 42 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout Clark County through the IRS deadline of April 15, 2010. Volunteer tax preparers will also file prior years’ returns from 2006–2008 with W-2 and 1099 forms. For more information or to obtain VITA site locations, dial 2-1-1 or visit nevada211.org.

In 1950, at the Las Vegas Desert Inn, a sailor had made twenty-seven straight passes (wins) with the dice at craps. The odds against such a feat are 12,467,890 to 1. If he would have bet the house limit on each roll he would have earned $268 million! But, he was way to timid with his wagers and he walked away from the table with only $750. The dice today are enshrined in the hotel on a velvet pillow under glass.
