March 3, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has completed a turf conversion project at Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Dr. (at Reunion Drive and Sonatina Drive), removing 25,000 square feet of non-functional turf and replacing it with xeric plants, decomposed granite, and boulders. The project is part of the department’s Drought Response Plan and is designed to save money while also conserving water and other natural resources in the community.
“Non-functional turf can be defined as turf areas where the only time they’re stepped on is for mowing,” said Dominick Casey, assistant director, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “This project alone will save an estimated 1.37 million gallons of water annually, which is significant because of the ongoing drought conditions here in Southern Nevada. Since 2003, our department has completed 85 similar projects, for a combined annual savings of 68 million gallons of water—the equivalent of 100 Olympic-sized pools.”
An additional benefit of the conversion is that it eliminates the problem of irrigation overspray that often reached sidewalks at the park during windy conditions. The project design was provided by the department’s in-house Park Planning division, and the turf conversion was completed by the Parks team.
