Want to Read More, Hear More—of ME?
I f ya’ll want more of me, I have the answer. I am now writing for the new World Team Poker. If you want to see my articles or find out what World Team Poker is all about, go to: www.worldteampoker.com.
If you want to hear an in-depth interview with me, go to www.drcheckraise.com and click on my face! Wait until after the commercials and enjoy. It’s the “Poker Joe and Doc” show. I had a ball with these guys! We all had so much to say that we stepped all over each other. They did a terrific job of editing. I told them that we three, in this interview, reminded me of the ladies on the View, they get so excited they step all over each other and you can’t understand what anybody is saying! One of the guys said that was the first time he had ever been compared to a woman! I realized in this interview that I say the word, “Absolutely” too much. I must find different verbalization when I totally agree or disagree or have any strong opinion!
On the “Absolute” Subject…
After the last comment on my blog about using the word, “absolutely” too much , I got the following email from one of my favorite fans, Mr. Humphries. Before you get bored and wonder, “What the hell?” Get through the six thoughts to the bottom line, which I don’t agree with. You see, Mr, H. didn’t listen to the show or he would have known that my “absolutelys” were to emphasize and agree with my hosts, most of the time. The absolute most important point that he made was at the end about “White Knight, Black Nights!” Thank you, Mr. H., for your time and energy.
My friend Hermie, who is smart as a whip and a public speaker, suggested that I use any of the following when I need to absolutely make a point or absolutely agree with someone: “You’ve got it!,” “No question in my mind,” “You’re right on the money,” “I can’t emphasize that enough,” “Without a doubt,” “You’re heading in the right direction,” “Exactly!” and, “Now you’re talking!”
Sorry Mr. H., but there are so many times that I do need to emphasize when I am talking about poker! I doubt I will be deleting “absolutely” from my vocabulary; however, I will be using more of Hermie’s suggestions and less “absolutelys.”
Thanks for reading and for getting in touch.
Hi, Susie ...
In response to your blog, dated 9 March 2010, regarding “absolutely” may I share some thoughts ... by the way, the following thoughts can be applied to the over-usage of the word “absolutely” and to a variety of behaviors/concepts/ideas/and/“issues” found in The Game --- dot connecting is allowed --- ...
Thought One: most of the time we use “absolutely” in order to strengthen “that which follows” because we are fearful that our ideas/thoughts are not strong enough to stand alone ...
Thought Two: this is a personal image problem that we are attempting to correct with strong grammar ... we might be better served by believing-in and thinking better of our Selves ...
Thought Three: “that which follows” does not need to be strengthened ... our ideas/thoughts are ours ... what matters is that we are willing to stand on our hind legs and speak that which we know/believe ... no use to intensify the importance because that which we know/believe is important without intensification ... the importance is that we believe that we are important ... our worth is not dependent upon whether people agree with us or like/love/or/approve of us ...
Thought Four: the strongest statement we can make is the simplest, for instance --- “I agree,” “I disagree” and “my opinion is .....” --- ... once spoken, then we allow the hearer/receiver to do with our message whatever they choose ... we are not in-control of what they do with what we give them, we are in control of what we give them ...
Thought Five: folks who want to control/convince others are folks who use intense words and concepts in order to “force” their ideas/opinions on The Universes ...
Thought Six: the above five thoughts are bull-shit and the over-use of the word “absolutely” might just be a habituated behavior that has nothing to do with the above five thoughts ...
Susie, these “strange” thoughts come to you not because I think you have a personal image problem ... they come in order to save you time and energy in searching for other words to substitute for “absolutely” ... bottom line is that you do not need any substitute words, you just need to trash “absolutely” ...
My apologies for my rambling ... I obviously have way too much time on my hands ... by the way, I just re-read “White Knight/ Black Night” ... still a treat ...
This note brings you warm thoughts from San Diego, best wishes for your continued success as a player/teacher/author, and
Love to you and yours ...
Raymond Humphries
