Reid Meets With Professional Fire Fighters Of Nevada

March 17, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid met today with Nevada’s firefighters professional association to discuss the development of search and rescue response systems and opportunities for job creation. Attendees included Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada President Rusty McAllister, Vice President Joe Espinoza, North District Vice President Robert Schreihans, South District Vice President Ryan Beaman and Secretary-Treasurer Scott M. Gorgon.

“Investment in emergency services creates jobs that save lives. We have already created or saved important public service jobs in Nevada through the Recovery Act,” Reid said. “As we move closer to wild fire season, I am committed to ensuring that our state’s brave firefighters have the resources they need to protect Nevadans from the threat of fire and respond quickly in emergencies.”

The Reid Report—March 17, 2010

Dear Fellow Nevadan,

Today, the Senate passed the HIRE Act, which cuts taxes for small businesses to hire new employees and funds job-creating construction projects, saving nearly 1 million jobs across the country. Last week, we passed legislation that helps out-of-work families by extending unemployment benefits and COBRA health coverage, and it made permanent the sales tax deduction. I fought for these measures because they will help businesses keep their doors open and help families put food on the table.

Homeowners in our state are struggling, and I am working hard in Washington to help them. I discussed this problem with President Obama in Las Vegas last month, and shortly thereafter the Treasury Secretary announced the creation of a new program to help homeowners in hard-hit states like ours, whose housing prices have fallen more than 20 percent.  Of those five states, Nevada will receive the most funding per capita—more than $100 million. I am very pleased that the Administration has answered Nevada’s call for help, and it was my privilege to fight on behalf of my state’s homeowners.

I also worked with the White House this week on an agreement to move forward on health insurance reform. Without this legislation, insurance companies will continue to deny coverage to patients with preexisting conditions, insurance rates and co-pays will continue to skyrocket and our nation’s debt will continue to increase. However, if we pass this commonsense legislation, families and business will find relief. Consumers will have more options and more protection.

I would like to thank the thousands of Nevadans who sent their prayers last week following the serious traffic accident involving my wife and daughter. I am pleased to report that they are both on their way to a full recovery.
