Women’s Chamber Honors
Thalia Dondero With Hall Of Fame Pioneer Award

Annual Event Also Recognized Five Hall Of Fame Leadership Inductees, One Young Professional And One Media Inductee

T
halia Dondero, the first women elected to the Clark County Commission in 1974, received the Women’s Hall of Fame Pioneer Award from the Women’s Chamber Foundation on Friday, March 19, 2010, at a luncheon at Morton’s The Steakhouse. Dondero’s award was presented by friend, colleague and last year’s recipient, The Honorable Lorraine Hunt-Bono.

Dondero is the third recipient of this award that honors her for decades of community service. She was a member of the Clark Count Commission until 1994 and its first woman president. In 1996, she won election to the Board of Regents. As a mother of five, her involvement with the Parent Teacher’s Association and the Service League led to participation with the Girl Scouts. As chair of the Las Vegas Valley Water District Board, Dondero helped find available and adequate water supplies for the valley.

At the luncheon, five leaders, one young professional and one woman in media were inducted bringing the total Women’s Hall of Fame Alumni to 42.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees were: Lorrinda Gray-Davis-director of diversity, Perini Building Company; Ann McGee-president of Miracle Flights for Kids; Debra Nelson-MGM Mirage, vice president of corporate diversity and community affairs; Paula Bell-Saxton-president of Sacon Construction; and Y. Caryl Suzuki, Clark County School principal. The young professional was Marissa Hawkins-president of Facelogic and Massage Envy, and the media was represented by “Melanie in the Morning” radio personality at Sunny 106.5FM.

June Beland, the chamber’s president and CEO, explains that the mission of the Women’s Hall of Fame is to publicly honor all the nominees and recipients from the ATHENA® Awards for their achievements and community support. Debra Nelson and Marissa Hawkins were recipients of the 2009 ATHENA® Award. Melanie in the Morning was the recipient from the Women in Performing Arts, Entertainment and Media Awards. This year’s 7th Annual ATHENA Awards will be held on November 12. Nominations are open now through Sept. 24.

At the luncheon, Heidi Hayes, the morning news anchor for FOX 5, filled in as emcee. Money from raffles and a silent auction at the event will go towards educational scholarships for young professionals and grants for women. The scholarships will be given out at the ATHENA® Awards.
