E
ach week we track the 5 college hoop teams that I have determined will show a “positive return on investment” by season’s end. This year I have selected Cornell, Tennessee, St. Mary’s, Siena and UNLV.
“Sweet 16” it has a nice ring to it—no? Would you believe that 3 members of the Pos 5 made it that far in the NCAAs?
For the team members of the Big Red of Cornell, it may not be what their “ole man” had in mind, when he pushed Jr. to get good grades in high school and then put up the big bucks to get them into an Ivy League school, but this may be the biggest thing yet for 9 Big Red seniors before taking on Wash. DC or Wall. St...At VCO press time last night, Cornell was in the process of taking on the hoop “Blue Bloods” of Kentucky. For Cornell, win, and its 3 more games to go, lose, and they can go home and back to the books, but with their heads held high.
As for the 5 seniors on the St. Mary’s Gaels squad, March Madness may be the shining moment of their athletic careers. Hell, if they can survive the bumps and bangs of future NBAer Omar Samhan in practice, they should be rewarded with a deep trek into territory that over 175 Division 1 teams did not reach this year.
Tomorrow, St. Mary’s will take on the Baylor Bears, hoping to advance to the “Elite 8.” Not bad for a #12 seed (Cornell) and a #10 seed (the Gales). The Pos 5 team that was not much of a surprise to reach the round of 16, the 6th seeded Tennessee Volunteers and their 9 seniors go up against the possible college player of the year, Evan Turner and the rest of his Ohio St. teammates also tomorrow.
The Pos 5 finished the regular season and playoffs at 112-60 SU and 71-63 ATS—71-63 is only 53%, but it will get the money.
As long as one of the Pos 5 remain in the NCAAs, I’ll continue with their accolades...
Till next week, “here’s nothing but net.”
