Senator Ensign Supports Extension To Unemployment Insurance Without Adding To Debt

March 26, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign last night supported an extension to unemployment insurance for Nevadans without adding to our nation’s already staggering debt level.

“The passage of last night’s legislation would have ensured that Nevadans who need assistance would continue to receive unemployment benefits while protecting taxpayer dollars at the same time,” said Ensign. “I understand the importance of helping those Nevadans who are in need right now, and I will continue to work hard to ensure that we address this problem in a way that does not increase our nation’s debt even more.”

Had Senate Democrats allowed the legislation to receive an up-or-down vote, it would have enacted a fully paid for one-week extension of unemployment insurance. However, Senate Republicans continued to negotiate with their colleagues and did come to agreement on another fully paid for extension of benefits, but that proposal was vocally rejected by House Democrats without holding a vote. Consequently, unemployment benefits are now scheduled to lapse on April 5th.

“As was the case in February when I voted for an extension of unemployment benefits that was paid for, Congress absolutely can provide for those who need assistance and also find the money pay for it. The time has come for Congress to live within its means the same way every American family has to.”
