The Jello Birthdays

The Jello Birthdays

A
few weeks ago it was decided: Hermie and I were going to give three of our March birthday girlfriends a combined birthday party. Each of them could invite four guests and this was to be a girlfriends only shindig. As it turned out, two guys got in the door: Fernando Domacia and Donnie Vann. Well, actually Fernando came through the door, Donnie came to us via Skype. In case you’re scratching your head over who these very special men are. Let me help you out. The following is an excerpt from my blog back in the fall when I returned from a business/pleasure trip to Florida:
A highlight, playing FL poker, was meeting Donnie Vann at the St. Johns room, where he is a regular. Everyone knew Donnie and it was apparent, they respected him. He played a good tough game—never once picking up his cards…or his chips. He simply gave his friend his instructions on how to play a hand. Donnie is a quadriplegic, due to a diving accident when he was 17 years old. He says that poker is his life and online poker was a real boost. His online name is “Can’t Move.” He is full of good humor and a perfect example of the positive attitude. He plans to drive (ride) out to Las Vegas for the 2010 WSOP. He will be in a white van, pulling a white trailer. He hopes to sell advertising on both so if you are interested or if you know anyone, now is the time to contact him, via me.
Susie and Donnie VannDonnie and I have become friends since our first meeting in FL and I thought he should meet the girls. Which he did, each and every one of them. When he met JJ Lui, he immediately said, “I’ve seen you on TV, girl. You are tough!” I also took Donnie on a tour of my poker memorabilia-filled home. When we got to my boudoir, he said, and I quote, “I can’t believe I am in Susie Isaacs bedroom!” He is a hoot! He then had his nurse take me on a tour of his room. He has as much Steeler stuff as I have poker stuff. So, Donnie got to come to our girls only birthday party and I have a feeling, it will not be the last time.

Now for Fernando. This was a business arrangement (okay, monkey business.) I met Fernando through my next door neighbor. He had retired from his previous job because of an injury and had been to dealers school. He loves to play poker and thought he might finance the beginning of playing poker professionally by dealing poker and studying the game from the dealer’s box, as well as books, etc. (Smart young man!) And what was his previous occupation you ask? He was a Chippendales’ dancer, make that “entertainer!” Believe me, he has not lost his looks or his moves since he left the stage.

Let’s get back to the beginning. Everyone arrived around 11 a.m. and sampled our Jello shots. Big Hit! We had a huge breakfast, complete with a waffle bar (strawberry, blueberry, banana, and pecan waffles,) and an egg and cheese soufflé that was my Mama’s recipe. A lot of trouble, but worth it. Not to mention donut holes, mini bagels and cream cheese, turkey sausage and pig bacon. Then it was Jello shots for dessert followed by our first poker game of the day, followed by another round of Jello shots.

At noon, Fernando showed up in a freshly starched tux shirt, black tie and black slacks to deal for us and as a surprise to the girls. One of the guests hires poker dealers all the time and hired Fernando before he ever dealt a hand. His plan was to audition for her as he dealt for us. She said, ‘No problem, I’m hiring him whether he can deal or not. I can look at him while he learns to deal!” It was during the first break from our game that Fernando disappeared, then reappeared in one of his Chippendales’ costumes, same black pants…only this time, just a bow tie and cuffs. It was a Kodak moment, indeed!

The Birthday Girls and Fernando

The birthday girls, as well as all guests were LOL and having a great time. He went to get dressed to continue dealing, but the boos were so overwhelming that he remained a dealing Chippendale for the rest of the day. Some of the comments I heard, “Look at those six-pack abs! I’ll have a case!” Another chimed in, “Hell, I have a barrel!” Fernando was a hit! He also got several other “gigs” from his performance at Susie Isaacs. A couple of bachelorette parties as well as the dealing job.

Hermie and I made so many jelly shots, we thought we would be having them for days, however, every last jiggle of Jello was sucked, licked or spooned out of our little shot cups. We had made a couple of ice tray full of shots, just in case. Sassy, being one of the guests of honor, took one over, all for herself.

Was it a good party? Well, some of our guests had to leave for a poker club, but some stayed for more poker. At 7 p.m., we called our favorite masseur and she happened to be available and came right over. The last guest departed at 11 p.m.. I feel safe to say, a good time was had by all. We did have some designated drivers, but many just stayed long enough to get de-Jelloed, massaged, and sober.

Footnote: Some of the girls ended up at the Venetian for their 7 p.m. tournament. Several of them chopped the event for a very nice birthday payday and I won’t mention any names, but one of them dropped her cell phone in the toilet! Not funny at the time, but funny as hell the next day.

Again, no names, but another of the girls reported that she discovered Jello in her hair and a piece of waffle in her bra!

Another: Another partygoer reported, my fridge is now full of Jello shooters. Thank you, we have discovered a fifth basic food group—J-E-L-L-O!
