*** Congresswoman Marks Donation of New Reading Materials to School ***
April 5, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today held a reading session with more than 60 Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School students. During her visit to the school, students listened to Berkley read from the book Call Me Madame President by author Sue Pyatt.
Following the reading session, the Congresswoman joined Louise Helton, State Director, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada to mark the donation of new reading materials to Martinez Elementary through a partnership between CIS and Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.). CIS and K.I.D.S have also partnered on a donation that will provide thousands of new children’s books for distribution to Nevada schools in coming months.
“Children need books of their own and having them available at home helps young readers develop this vital skill that will benefit our boys and girls for a lifetime. I still remember favorite stories read to me as a child, and as a mom, I saw first-hand the benefits of reading to my own sons. That is why I also enjoy visiting schools like Martinez Elementary and reading to our young students. I thank K.I.D.S. and Communities in Schools for arranging this generous donation of new reading materials that will benefit our southern Nevada schools and spark the imaginations of our young readers,” said Berkley.
