The city of Las Vegas plans to celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony at Gary Dexter Park, located at 800 Upland Blvd., at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 19. Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian, City Manager Betsy Fretwell, and city staff will be joined by Nevada Division of Forestry Resource Management Officer Matt Koepnick, D’Vorre and Hal Ober Elementary School Principal Joanna Gerali-Schwartz, and Mary Weisenmiller and her second grade students, for the festivities.
“A key priority for the City Council is our commitment to creating sustainable, livable neighborhoods,” Councilwoman Tarkanian said. “A great way to do that is to continue to plant trees in our parks that are appropriate to our desert environment. Through the Tree City USA program, we are making a difference in our community today and for future generations of Las Vegans to enjoy.”The Arbor Day Foundation is a non-profit education organization that helps people plant and care for trees. The foundation sponsors the Tree City USA program with the support of the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
The Tree City USA Program was developed after Urban Forestry State Specialist Pat Rowley read about the resolution that was adopted at the 71st annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, to promote the preservation and creation of urban forests. The resolution states that urban forests provide green infrastructure for cities, linking communities to recreational areas and green spaces, improving the quality of life for residents and allowing residents to take an active role in planting, protecting and restoring forest areas. In support of this resolution, Councilwoman Tarkanian is taking an active role in enhancing Dexter Park.
In addition to planting a community tree during the event, the National Arbor Day Foundation plans to name Las Vegas as a Tree City USA, marking the 18th year that the city of Las Vegas will receive the award. Koepnick will present the Tree City USA flag to the city of Las Vegas. Councilwoman Tarkanian plans to present the flag and a proclamation to Ober Elementary School students. The youngsters also have a time capsule full of collected treasures that they plan to bury near the tree. Councilwoman Tarkanian plans to hand out autographed souvenir baseballs to the children taking part in the tree planting ceremony. The baseballs were donated by Redrock Little League.
