Ensign: American Familes Will Be Hurting
Even More From Higher Taxes

April 15, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign today commented on ‘Tax Day’ today and the higher taxes that will hurt all Americans next year:

“As Americans head to the post office today to pay Uncle Sam, many are reflecting on the current economic situations across our state and country. Our economies are still struggling, jobs still remain scarce and taxes are trending upward as a result of the policies put in place by this Administration and the majority party in Congress,” said Ensign. “Unfortunately, the outlook for next year will not be any better unless we correct and reverse the current course that we are on.

“Nevada families that are struggling to pay their taxes this year will be practically suffocated by their new tax burden next year. Taxing and spending our country deeper into a recession is the wrong policy for our country. Instead of stealing more money from the pockets of hard-working Americans, we should be instituting policies that incentivize job creation through lower taxes and make our country financially independent once again.”

Ensign Comments On Trip To Afghanistan, Pakistan

April 14, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign today commented on his trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan while attending a press conference with Senators Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and Representative Rob Wittman (R-VA-1). Senator Carper led the bipartisan group of senators as they assessed the situation in these volatile areas; Senator Ensign served as the lead Republican on the trip and Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) also attended.

“Our servicemen and -women are doing a tremendous job in these areas and so, too, are our civilians on the ground,” said Ensign. “The plan that General McCrystal has put in place is the right plan; it’s the only plan, but its success is still to be determined.

“We need to give him time to implement his strategy because a military approach is not the only thing needed to stabilize these areas; we need to win over the hearts and minds of the people there, and I think we are on our way to doing this. President Obama is doing the right thing by listening to the generals on the ground. It’s imperative that we have both a stabile Afghanistan and a stabile Pakistan.

“I truly enjoyed meeting with service members from Nevada during my visit and continue to feel honored to serve as their United States Senator.”

Senator Ensign spent about a week touring through Afghanistan and Pakistan and met with local and national leaders throughout the two countries. During his meeting with President Karzai of Afghanistan, President Karzai expressed his support of the American forces in Afghanistan and the senators stressed that the overarching plan in this area is not to occupy the country as we want our servicemen and -women home with their families as soon as their jobs are completed.

In evaluating the strategy in place in Afghanistan, Senator Ensign’s major concern has to do with the decision of whether or not to eradicate the poppy crop, which funds the insurgency and keeps many Afghans dependent upon the Taliban. Senator Ensign believes that need to look to other examples around the globe such as Colombia when confronting this issue and examine whether our current policy or a strategy that includes eradication will lessen the hold that the Taliban has on many people across the country.
