World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day, April 23...

23 April is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this respect, UNESCO created both the World Book and Copyright Day and the UNESCO Prize... [read more] [read more-wikipedia]

Penn & Teller will lead the Walk and will match all monetary funds raised by the team’s pledges and donations to AFAN.

Additional event highlights include: a special performance by Director and Choreographer of CHER at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Doriana Sanchez; PEEPSHOW’s Josh Strickland singing Michael Bolton’s “Go the Distance”; Las Vegas’ one and only glee club, On with the Show, singing the National Anthem, RENT’s hit song, “Seasons of Love” and a unique rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”; special mash-up by DJ Axis; and KLAS Ch. 8 personality and event host, Chris Saldana.

Registration is free, but a minimum donation of $35 per person is encouraged and includes an official AIDS Walk Las Vegas t-shirt. This year’s AIDS Walk will be held downtown at the World Market Center on the corner of Bonneville and Grand Central Parkway. To register, please visit www.afanlv.org. To join the Penn & Teller Challenge click here, follow the Penn & Teller Challenge link to ‘Join Our Team.’

For the past 19 years, AFAN has hosted the AIDS Walk with great success and led the community of Southern Nevada to recognize the disease that has grown to be a worldwide pandemic. Throughout the years, the AIDS Walk has drawn in an increasing number of participants including large corporations and families in the community. The AIDS Walk serves as a creative and exciting way for businesses and organizations to come together to be involved with sponsors including: Penn & Teller, World Market Center, Jason’s Deli, FIJI Water, The Apothecary Shops and many others. In 2009 the walk drew more than 8,000 people, and in addition raised more than $550,000. The goal this year is to exceed last year’s attendance and to raise more money than last year’s AIDS Walk.
