Is Jerry Seinfeld Still Funny?

L
Jerry Seinfeldast Saturday night the Boss couldn’t get me a ticket for the big fight at the MGM, instead I was told, “Go to Caesars, and see if Jerry Seinfeld is still funny.” Unlike fighters, we expect entertainers to play well past their prime. To make matters worse, entertainers think they CAN play well past their prime.

Regrettably some entertainers past their prime are getting prime prices. They markdown dated merchandise at the market; shouldn’t dated entertainers charge less for their shows? Comedy clubs around town charge under $50.00 for three NEW comedians on the same bill, that’s less than $17.00 per comedian. For the cost of a $200.00 Seinfeld ticket, you could get 11 & 3/4 NEW comedians, instead of one OLD comedian.

All right, is Jerry Seinfeld still funny? Well, Yes & NO. Just like an old fighter, it was good to see him alive and still healthy. I like that he still doesn’t use the “F” word to get a joke. But it was like seeing an Elvis impersonator act. The Jerry Seinfeld of today was trying to look, sound, and impersonate the old Jerry Seinfeld.

Lots of empty seatsThe Seinfeld of today would give out the same old yell at a punch line, and the audience still laughed. Not because his jokes were funny, but because his fans are trained to laugh at the end of any Seinfeld yell. At 56 his yell has a scratch in it, and he is no longer the cute young guy of 30 years ago that could easily get over on an audience with a smile.

For a few minutes at the end he took questions from the audience. Someone asked if he would do another TV series, and he said, “Absolutely not, it’s hard work, and I’m tired, old, and rich.” But he does the stand-up act, almost 100 dates a year; if it’s not for the money, it must be for the applause and his own gratification.

With tickets for the Jerry Seinfeld show at $200.00, he is definitely getting more gratification from us, than we get from him. Like all dated merchandise, Jerry Seinfeld needs a markdown in ticket prices.
