E
very year, May brings out the best in Las Vegas entertainment. There have not been a lot of shows opening lately, but there are some on the horizon. The convention calendar is encouraging to the city because it seems to be fairly full. The summer season is upon us, and the pool party schedule is active until September. It is a crucial time for productions to get a strong foothold into the entertainment world and establish themselves for the very busy fall season. The summer will generally determine what shows are going to be staying around for a while and which ones will be closing forever.
This May is going to be an interesting month for a lot of reasons. May is always an odd transitional month...the weather is changing as frequently as the shows...the only thing that we can really count on is that we know that by the end of the month, things will start getting hot...and the economic situation is a wild card for this entire season. Last month, the Visitor and Convention Bureau reported that tourism was at a “normal” level, but hotels reported losses due to the fact that room rates have been slashed.
Remember that Mother’s Day is on the 9th. If you’re in town, there are several shows that will offer specials for you and your mother. If you’re not in town...just remember Mom.
Every bar and club will have Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
May 15th is the 105th Anniversary of the founding of the City of Las Vegas. No one really cares about this statistic. We had a great 100-year celebration, and we may have to wait for the 150-year mark to get the city to celebrate again.
“Girl’s Night: The Musical,” the popular off-Broadway production, will be making it’s Las Vegas debut this year at the Hollywood Theater inside MGM Grand from May 6th to 26th, for a limited time only. “Girls Night: The Musical,” is about five female friends who get together for a night of crazy karaoke. The show is promised to engage and entertain you with chart-topping anthems like Lady Marmalade, It’s Raining Men, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, I Will Survive and more. On their night out, the girls celebrate friendship, life, love and laughter.
Academy Award-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri returns to The Venetian Showroom after the tremendous success of his 2009 Las Vegas premiere that was praised by the critics and adored by the public. A BRONX TALE, the celebrated play on which he based the legendary movie, Palminteri vividly depicts a young boy’s rough childhood in the 1960s-era Bronx and the unforgettable people he encountered. A classic coming-of-age story about reaching your true potential and trusting your heart, A BRONX TALE is directed by four-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Zaks. See it! It’s only here for a short time.

VEGAS! THE SHOW is produced by legendary Las Vegas Producer David Saxe. Choreographed by famed Broadway choreographer Tiger Martina, the show embodies the best of Las Vegas at its core. The show is heavily music based with showgirls and dancing and the music that led the way for performers today. This is the first Las Vegas produced show on the strip in nearly a decade. The show brings back the best of what makes Vegas, Vegas! The show will be opening in mid-June at the new Saxe Theatre in the Miracle Mile Shops in Planet Hollywood.
The San Gennaro Feast is at the Silverton from May 5th to the 9th. The festival is the biggest Italian Feast in town is now even bigger. The Annual San Gennaro Feast is now a festival that is held twice a year and held in honor of the Saint San Gennaro. The festival features a wide variety of ethnic food vendors, live national acts hourly on the main stage, amusement rides and game fun for the whole family. The festival is one of the most popular festivals for locals and visitors from all over the world. Each festival expects to out-do the last...and the food is wonderful.
Helldorado Days, this May 13–16, is an outdoor community event celebrating Las Vegas’s tribute to the Wild West and produced by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 1468. Helldorado Days which began in 1935, is the longest running civic event in the history of Las Vegas, originally created as a means to encourage tourism to the city upon completion of the Boulder Dam. With over 40,000 people in attendance, Helldorado Days offers a 4-day pro rodeo, a parade, carnival, treasure hunt for gold, whiskerino contest, golf tournament, poker tournament, art show and auction, trail ride, exhibits and food. For 4 days Downtown Las Vegas is transformed into Helldorado Days as the event takes over several vacant downtown blocks and builds a rodeo arena and carnival from the ground up. Helldorado Days is a non-profit community event. The members of Elks Lodge No. 1468 are committed to assisting children and veterans in need and have given back over $75,000 in 2009 and over $4 million to the community since 1935.
