The Ultimate Gift

I
hope you had a wonderful MOTHER’S DAY! My terrific son had the surprise of a lifetime set in motion for me. He planned to sneak into Reno for a Mother’s Day surprise to beat all Mother’s Day surprises for Susie Isaacs! However, due to the horrific flooding in middle Tennessee, he could not leave the area as he is helping with the clean up. He did manage to get a gift (my favorite perfume) Fed-Xed to me and a card explaining his aborted plans. Believe me, the thought was almost as good as if he had pulled it off.

Jennifer Harman, Poker ProSaturday, May 8, was the HUGE Jennifer Harman Charity Poker Tournament, in Reno, or as they called it, a “Poker Throw-down.” It was team play or individual play with $50 rebuys. I normally don’t like re-buy tournaments, but this was for a good cause—The National Kidney Foundation—and they were taking credit cards! It was a huge deal with gobs of poker pros and snowboard Olympic champions. Keep in mind; Lake Tahoe is just down the road.

The event was super successful. I never did get a final count but I’d say there were at least 500 players from all over. The poker stars were here by the dozens, in support of Jennifer and the National Kidney Foundation. Dealers were imported from every shift and every casino in the city and surrounding areas, as far away as Las Vegas, WA, and Oregon. Mike Gainey and Billy V. and the Peppermill did a wonderful job of organization and running the event.

The Kidney Foundation is near and dear to Jennifer Harman. Her Mom died from kidney failure when Jen was a child. She and her sister endured the same kidney disease. By the time she was 12, she was so ill that they gave her four months to live if she didn’t receive a donor kidney. Her father came forward and even though he wasn’t a perfect match, it was close and Jennifer got her first transplant. It lasted 22 years and then more problems. This time two cousins and two complete strangers came forward with the ultimate offer, to donate one of their healthy kidneys to Jennifer. Today, Jennifer is healthy, happy, married with children, and one hell of a poker player!
