Ensign Votes Against Out-Of-Control Government Spending

May 28, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign last night voted against the 2010 Supplemental Spending Bill because the bill was not a vehicle to provide funding for our troops, but rather another chance for Democrats to excessively spend money that the United States does not have.

“I would really like for one bill to come to the floor this year that actually does what the Democrats say that it does,” said Ensign. “The American people have watched as the Senate has passed bill after bill, under the guise of an emergency, which continue to add to our already record-breaking $13 trillion national debt. This bill was simply more of the same.

“When President Obama stated that funding for our troops would not be hidden inside a supplemental bill, Democrats ignored him and brought this bill to the floor of the Senate. When Republicans introduced legislation to add to the number of National Guard stationed along the U.S./Mexico border, Democrats defeated them. When Republicans offered amendments to this bill to cut the excessive spending and offset the cost of the bill, Democrats defeated them. Out-of-control spending and partisanship were once again alive and well in the debate of this bill and in its passage, which is why I voted against it. It is shameful that heading into the Memorial Day recess, we are passing pork-barrel spending on the backs of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.”

The Defense Spending Supplemental will add another $59 billion to an already staggering $13 trillion national debt; none of this cost has been offset.
