Berkley: UN Must Recognize Right Of Israel To Defend Itself Against Terrorist Threats

*** Points to North Korea, Iran as True Threat to Global Stability ***

June 16, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today took part in a bipartisan news conference with House colleagues to defend Israel’s right to protect its citizens against terrorist threats and to denounce calls at the UN for an outside investigation into recent incidents involving the Gaza blockade.

“The UN is once again seeking to condemn Israel for defending its citizens against Hamas terrorists. This is the same UN that gives the green light for Israel's enemies to attack the Jewish state, and then condemns Israel for any retaliation against its terrorist attackers or acts of self-defense to protect its families. It happened last year with the deeply-flawed and disturbingly-biased Goldstone Report, and we are here to say it must not happen again,” said Berkley.

Berkley highlighted the UN’s double standard when it comes to Turkey’s own record and Turkey’s calls for action against Israel following the recent flotilla incident.

“Turkey is a perfect example of the blatant hypocrisy on display. While they criticize Israel in the UN, Turkey continues to occupy Cyprus, denies the Armenian Genocide and warmly welcomes Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the genocidal Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

The Congresswoman also questioned why the UN has failed to act against North Korea for its sinking of a South Korean military vessel and called for greater attention to the growing threat from a nuclear Iran.

“All of this is taking place while North Korea goes unpunished in the UN for a flagrant act of war against South Korea. And the Iranian regime stands on the precipice of developing a nuclear weapon. Either of these despotic regimes could kill millions with access to nuclear weapons and murderous ambitions,” Berkley said.

Berkley urged the world community to focus on aggression by North Korea and Iran and to recognize Israel’s legitimate right to defend its borders and to determine the policies needed to safeguard its population against terrorism.

“The world community must focus its attention on these real threats to peace and reject efforts in the UN to unfairly punish the Middle East's strongest democracy -- the State of Israel -- from protecting its borders and citizens against terrorism.

Berkley Calls For Clean Energy Future

** America Must Break Reliance on Saudi Arabia, BP’s of the World **

June 16, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today took to the House floor to call for a clean energy future that will create new jobs in Nevada and across the nation, while allowing the U.S. to break free of its dependence on oil. Video of Berkley’s remarks can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKleuuANhuI and the text of her statement appears below:

“The horrific crisis and tragedy in the Gulf must be a wake-up call to America that we must break our addiction to fossil fuel and move with all deliberate haste to a renewable energy future or America simply will have no future. Energy independence is an economic necessity. We can create an entire economy based on green jobs. It's not only an environmental necessity, look at the crisis that we have in the Gulf, with the loss of life, and the destruction of an ecosystem that will take a lifetime to fix. It's a national security imperative. We have to break from our reliance on the Saudis, Venezuelans and the B.P.'s of the world, and harness the sun, wind, geothermal, biomass. The State of Nevada can become the epicenter of renewable energy. We just need the will to do it. I yield back and ask my colleagues to please join me in a renewable energy future for this great country.”

Berkley Blasts Senate GOP Over Failure To Support Medicare Physician Payment Fix

*** Warns Seniors in Nevada and Across the Nation Could Lose Access to Doctor if 21% Cut Takes Effect ***

June 15, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today took to the House floor to warn that seniors and military families in Nevada and nationwide could lose access to the doctor if Congress does not approve legislation to stop a pending cut in Medicare payments to physicians. Video of Berkley’s remarks can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCFRn0t-0F0 and her statement appears below:

“The Republicans in the Senate are once again doing everything they can to destroy Medicare for millions of seniors by blocking legislation that will stop the 21% cut in payments to doctors who care for our elderly citizens. They say they’re worried about the deficit and paying the docs will add to the deficit. Excuse me. We are fighting two wars not paid for. We have homeland security needs not paid for. Medicare part D, not paid for. Not a word from the Senate Republicans. But they’re drawing a line on paying the doctors who treat Medicare patients: ‘this is going to add to the deficit.’ Let's stop playing politics with Medicare. Pay the doctors, and provide health care for millions and millions of our senior citizens.”

Berkley voted in May for passage of The American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act which will protect Nevadans by stopping a drastic 21% cut in the reimbursements to physicians who care for Medicare patients and for military families covered under TRICARE. The bill is now being debate by the Senate.
