Ensign Testifies Against Sloan Hills Gravel Pit

June 16, 2010 – Washington, D.C.Senator John Ensign today testified before the Senate Committee on Natural Resources on legislation that he cosponsored, the Sloan Hills Withdrawal Act of 2010.

“The people of Henderson have spoken out against this proposal for a gravel pit in the middle of the city,” said Ensign. “I am urging my colleagues to stand with the Nevada delegation, the Clark County Commission and the residents of Henderson to support the Sloan Hills Withdrawal Act so that we can once and for all move past this unpopular and unreasonable idea.”

The area that Senator Ensign’s legislation will address is about 640 acres surrounded by the City of Henderson, essentially a “donut hole” in the middle of the third largest city in Nevada. The area in question is undergoing an Environmental Impact Study by the BLM to address the proposals by two companies to construct, operate and maintain the gravel pit.

Over 5,000 people have signed a petition against this proposed gravel pit because of the noise and dust that will be generated from this type of operation and because it may have an adverse effect on property values in our already struggling state.
