Ensign: Deepwater Drilling Ban Irresponsible

June 22, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Senator John Ensign today commented on the ruling by a New Orleans federal judge to lift the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling imposed by President Obama.

“The oil spill in the Gulf is without a doubt a tragic occurrence that will cripple many area industries like fishing and tourism,” said Ensign. “And while it is incredibly important that we work to ensure that an event such as this does not happen again, we cannot categorically ban deepwater drilling to do so.

“Much of the world’s oil is tied up in the hands of dangerous foreign regimes who wish to do harm to the United States, and this Administration has been vocally supportive of ending our dependence on dangerous foreign oil. Deepwater drilling plays an important role in our nation’s “all-the-above” approach to energy security. A ban on this type of drilling is irresponsible and unfounded and I would ask that the Administration comply with the court’s ruling.”
