June 24, 2010 – Henderson, NV – Adult softball teams from Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California will compete in the City of Henderson’s 22nd Annual Midnite Madness 1-Pitch Softball Tournament July 9-11. The tournament is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) which sanctions and promotes the program. People of all ages are invited to watch the all-night action; admission is free.
Play for the co-rec division takes place from 7 p.m. on Friday, July 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 10 at Arroyo Grande Sports Complex (298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.), Russell Road Recreation Complex (5901 E. Russell Rd.), and Dos Escuelas Park (1 Golden View at Paseo Verde Pkwy.). More than 50 co-rec teams will compete.
Men’s division play takes place from 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 11 at Arroyo Grande Sports Complex. There are over 30 teams competing in this division. Teams qualifying for berths will move on to the USSSA World Series, which will be hosted this fall in Orlando, Fla.
Midnite Madness is a one-pitch, pitch-to-own team tournament featuring half-hour games that are played one after another. Play begins at dusk and continues until the morning. Midnite Madness is also a bat manufacturers’ tournament, with Miken and Easton Sports providing all game bats. No personal bats are allowed. An evening home run contest will be held 7:00-10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at Arroyo Grande Sports Complex. Bat manufacturers will present awards to the top two home run hitters.

June 24, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and St. Rose Dominican Hospitals are co-hosting Stanford University’s “Living Healthfully With Chronic Conditions,” a six-part program for individuals or those with family members suffering from a chronic health condition. The program will be held 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, July 24 through Aug. 28, at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Rd. The self-management program was developed by the Division of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine at Stanford University for those suffering with a chronic health condition, such as diabetes, arthritis, congestive heart failure, pulmonary disease, or chronic pain. Participants will learn the right steps to reduce visits to the doctor, stay out of the hospital, maintain independence, and experience a better quality of life. Topics include dealing with frustration, fatigue, pain, and isolation; exercises to help maintain and improve strength and endurance; nutrition; and communicating effectively with family and health professionals.

June 24, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Safekey and Teen Scene advanced registration for the 2010-2011 school year. This will enable parents to register, fill out the necessary forms, and pay for their child’s first week of Safekey/Teen Scene.
Registration will be open from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday Aug. 11, Thursday, Aug. 12, and Friday, Aug. 13; from 9:00 am. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14; from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18; Thursday, Aug. 19, and Friday, Aug. 20; and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Parents can register at their choice of five recreation centers: Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Rd.; Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Pkwy.; Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.; Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Pkwy.; and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Dr.
Safekey is a before- and after-school recreational enrichment program held at all Henderson elementary schools. It features a variety of crafts, games and special activities as an alternative for kids while their parents work. It provides activities designed to help children grow socially, emotionally and physically and is available to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Teen Scene is an after-school program for teens in grades six through eight. It is designed to provide a safe, supervised environment for teens while their parents work. Structured with teens’ interests in mind, the program includes arts and crafts, sports, special events, and activities that promote confidence and self-esteem.

June 21, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a variety of demonstration cooking workshops at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Pkwy. Each workshop is $35 per person (ages 14 and up) with an additional $10 for supplies due to the instructor at class. The workshops explore the flavors, techniques, and tastes of authentic Thai or Chinese cuisine. Participants will be able to sample each dish.
