Reid Meets With Brianna Denison’s Mother On New DNA Law

June 22, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid met today with Bridgette Denison, mother of Brianna Denison, a Reno woman who was raped and murdered in 2008. DNA that was discovered in the investigation implicated a suspect who was later found guilty and has been sentenced to death.

Bridgette Denison and Sen. Reid spoke about the Katie Sepich Enhanced DNA Collection Act of 2010 , which increases Byrne grants for states that implement DNA collection programs for people who are arrested for the commission of a violent crime. Denison is lobbying the state legislature for a bill that would require DNA collection for suspects arrested for violent felonies in order to make Nevada eligible for the increased Byrne funding.

“What happened to Brianna Denison was an absolute tragedy,” said Reid. “I believe we must do more to capture DNA samples from criminals, and I respect her mother’s efforts to honor her daughter’s memory by advocating for law enforcement funding that will save lives by identifying violent offenders earlier through DNA cataloging. I encourage the state Legislature to pass a bill in their next session that will enable Nevada law enforcement to collect samples from violent offenders, so we don’t have to lose another bright, young Nevadan like Brianna.”

Reid Announces $170,000 To Help Homeless Veterans In Nevada

75 homeless veterans to find employment through reintegration program

June 22, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced that the United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS) in Las Vegas will receive a $170,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) that will enroll 100 homeless veterans and place at least 75 of them into jobs. The program provides job training to help veterans succeed in civilian careers.

“We must continue to do everything we can for our veterans because they have made so many sacrifices for our country,” Reid said. “This program will make it easier for veterans to transition back to civilian life and find meaningful employment opportunities through job training. No veteran should ever be homeless. I thank Labor Secretary Hilda Soldis for recognizing Nevada’s veterans with this grant.”

U.S. VETS is a non-profit organization in Las Vegas whose mission is the successful transition of military veterans and their families through the provision of housing, counseling, career development and comprehensive support. Since the organization’s inception in Las Vegas in 2001, nearly 4,000 veterans have been served within the “Veterans in Progress” program which provides veterans with housing and support including meals, clothing, outreach services, and employment assistance. In 2009 alone, the organization helped 191 veterans return to permanent employment.

Reid Statement On Juneteenth

June 18, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement in honor of the 145th anniversary of Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and informed Galveston’s slaves that they were free.

“A few days ago I joined some of my fellow lawmakers in dedicating a memorial to the slaves who built the U.S. Capitol building. These enslaved African-Americans were deprived of their freedom and forced to build a beautiful structure that has become a symbol of liberty and independence for people around the world. This sad irony underscores the importance of knowing our history – both the moments that make us proud and the moments that are still difficult to grasp.

“Juneteenth is an opportunity to commemorate the abolition of slavery in America, a time of reflection and gratefulness. While our country ended the practice of slavery over 140 years ago, our work to ensure freedom and equality for all people must continue for generations to come.

“I take great pride that slavery has been outlawed since the day Nevada joined the Union in 1864. That means that as pioneering Nevadans forged America’s frontier, we brought with us the ideals of a free and independent America.

“I join my fellow Nevadans and millions across the country in remembering and honoring the historic anniversary of Juneteenth.”

Reid Meets With Nevada Associated Builders And Contractors

June 18, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senator Harry Reid met this week with Wade Pope from the Nevada Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. Mr. Pope thanked Sen. Reid for the opportunity to discuss issues that affect Nevada’s small business, and also asked for Reid’s assistance to increase access to financing for construction projects and other legislative efforts that will help them recover from the difficult state of Nevada’s housing market.

“Builders and contractors in Nevada have felt the full force of this recession and I appreciate them meeting with me to discuss ways to provide a boost to the industry,” said Reid. “Declining home and land values, combined with a strong inventory of homes, have created a difficult situation in our state. That’s why we have been working to implement programs like the first time homebuyers tax credit. I remain committed to working with builders and contractors to identify tax breaks and incentives that will help these businesses recover.”
