The Secret is Out!

I
have been sitting on a big secret for months. At last I can share it with you. But first, a quick WSOP recap. I bombed out of the ladies event on a terrible beat, but good play. I got very deep in the Seniors, 78th out of 3,148, not bad and a nice little payday. As for the main event, I’d rather not even talk about it. It was a very nerve wracking and depressing day. As one of my friends said, my Poker Gods must have been asleep. If it could go wrong, it did! So, we move on.

Now for the secret surprise: Months ago, when I was calling and writing everybody and there brother, looking for sponsorship for Donnie Vann (quadriplegic from FL coming to his first WSOP) I contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers. Donnie has two great passions in his life; poker and the Steelers. They sent me a white Pittsburgh Steelers football, signed by the members of the 2009 team! I was so excited but I could not blog or go public with this wonderful story because Donnie reads my blogs! I contacted the media at the WSOP and told them of my plans. On Tuesday, July 6, the whole surprise unfolded and it was perfect. ESPN was there, as were many of Donnie’s friends from FL and CA and his nurses. I said something like this, “Donnie you are such an inspiration to so many and you have touched so many lives in such a special way. I contacted the Steelers and suggested that the team come to Las Vegas and root for you while you play the main event since you root for then continually. They were busy, but they did send you this special good luck gift.” He was very surprised and very touched. The football will go into his house which is already a shrine to the Steelers.

Donnie VannDonnie went on to play Day 1-B of the main event and during that time he was interviewed by NBC news. Donnie Vann is a star! He did make it through his first day on the green-felt battlefield and will return on Sat. July 10, for his day 2. Good luck Donnie!

Donnie has had a magnificent trip out west. For details, see his blog: www.dvann.blogspot.com.

One highlight was when Donnie visited the Golden West Casino in Bakersfield, CA. Jim Barbo, who used to be an executive at Donnie’s home poker room in Jax. is now the GM at the Golden West. When Donnie pulled up, he saw, “Welcome Donnie Vann” on the lighted sign in from of the casino. He said, “I’ve never seen my name in lights before. I felt like a celebrity!” Believe me Donnie, you are a star! And your life story is movie material.
