August 2010

A
ugust of 2010, marks the tenth year of this entertainment newsletter...TEN YEARS! Every month, I do my best to bring readers up to date with the ever-changing face of Las Vegas entertainment-shows that are opening, changing, or closing; as well as the major headliners that will be visiting our town. With both the news and reviews, I let people know what to expect when they came to town or want to go to a show. I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.

August is synonymous with the dogs days of summer here in Vegas—instead of a hot and dry 115 degrees, it’s 105 with enough humidity to make you sticky and sweat. The monsoon showers are always a threat at this time of year, and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere, anytime. According to all of the weather records, July is the hottest month in Las Vegas...but August always seems hotter. There are still a lot of pool parties and summer concerts going on. There are a lot of new shows in town, and the convention season is just getting started.

July was a very busy month in town...I think that the heat got to a lot of people...

Lani Misalucha and her show “Voices,” closed at the Hilton, and it will be replaced by a production of “Nunsense” starring Cindy Williams. Williams is best known for her role in “Laverne & Shirley.” She will kick off the production for the first six weeks. It is scheduled to open on September 1st.

“The Naughty Boys of Hypnosis” closed their show at the Harmon Theatre after a one-year run. The show is being replaced by “Hypnosis Unleashed,” with Michael Johns and Terry Stokes. “Unleashed” had been at the Harmon a long time ago before moving to the Tropicana Hotel. Now they are moving back because the room at the Trop is being renovated.

“Sin City Bad Girls” has closed at the Hilton...a shame...it was the best show of that genre in Las Vegas. Lead singer Lorena Peril is moving over to lead the cast of “Fantasy,” while former lead Angelica Bridges heads to Los Angeles for other opportunities.

The John Lennon Tribute show, “Just Imagine,” starring Tim Piper has left... suddenly and without notice it is gone. After just a few weeks into their three-month run, the show has disappeared. It was either a victim of the bad economy or legal issues about the use of the Beatles music...whatever the case, the show is gone.

Elvis impersonator Trent Carlini is moving from the big showroom at the Hilton one day a week to the Shimmer Cabaret for five days a week.

Zowie Bowie is heading back to the Red Rock Casino. The Red Rock is where it all got started for the duo. Chris Philips and Marley Taylor had been popular in Scottsdale, AZ for a long time before moving up to Vegas. Their success at Red Rock allowed them to move to several different venues before realizing that what they had at the Red Rock was the best thing for them. Their show re-launches the first weekend in Sept.

Mat Black, “Professional Bad Ass,” gets an opportunity to head his own show at the Harmon Theatre for a week while impressionist Larry G. Jones takes a vacation. Mat Black is characterized by his fairly raunchy and outrageous bits. It is a showcase and a test for the young comedian. If he does well, it could spawn a regular gig. The show is at 7:00 and is free with the purchase of a drink band.

Louis Anderson is moving out of the space at the Excalibur and into the comedy club at Palace Station. He is promising a family friendly, non-offensive show...as long as it is just him, because he is also promising appearances from a lot of his comedian friends...and he can’t promise that their content will be family friendly. I am a bit confused where that leaves the show...is it family friendly or not?

MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris, the only sensual French cabaret in Las Vegas, shares the beauty and female form of art up close and personal with guests as they begin “meet and greets” with patrons Friday, July 30. The classically trained dancers will offer VIP “meet and greets” between the 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday evening performances...for a small fee.

July 30 marks 29 fabulous years at Bally’s Las Vegas for Donn Arden’s Jubilee! To commemorate the anniversary, Bally’s Las Vegas is offering a special $29 ticket price to Nevada residents through Tuesday, August 31. One of the longest-running production shows on the famed Las Vegas Strip, Jubilee! features beautiful rhinestone-clad showgirls, lavish costumes, elaborate sets, world-renowned specialty acts, dynamic music, and graceful pageantry.

If you are interested in participating in the 2010 Las Vegas Showgirl Art Competition, the deadline for entries has been extended to August 10th. Go to: www.ShowgirlLegacy.com for more information. Las Vegas resident Lou Anne Harrison Chessik founded the Las Vegas Showgirl Art Competition more than four years ago in an effort to help keep the dying Las Vegas showgirl in the forefront of the public awareness.

Grammy-nominated artist and international recording icon Engelbert Humperdinck brings his legacy of love, sensitive interpretation of lyrics and distinct charm to The Orleans Showroom stage August 20, 21 and 22, each evening at 8 p.m. As a seasoned performer and singer extraordinaire, Humperdinck continues to captivate audiences with his ultra smooth charisma and inspiring collection of ballades. He has recorded more than 80 albums in his 40-year career including many multi-language versions, selling more than 150 million records worldwide—64 gold and 24 platinum albums.

On August 7th, Hooters will be hosting the launch of “Suffer,” a new clothing line by UFC star Frank Mir, at the Tito Ortiz Punishment MMA Store. Mir will be having an autograph signing from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on that day.

The MAGIC convention comes to town in the middle of the month. This monster show kicks off the start of the fall convention season. The winter show of MAGIC will bring in nearly 100,000 people and a much-needed boost to our economy. The men’s garment convention is always a popular and well-attended event. From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.

The month starts off a bit slow as far as the headliners go, but it certainly picks up steam, and of course, September will be crazy.
