My Guard Dog and the Bette Book

M
y Watch Dog
As mentioned in my last blog, Mr. Re is rapidly becoming my watch dog. If something is “amiss” he will bark. Raise seldom barks for, or, at anything or anyone, she just kind of stands behind him and lets him take care of the situation—otherwise (non-bark situations) she is the leader of the pact. A few nights ago, 4:30 a.m. to be exact, I awoke to Mr. Re barking and raising hell. Simultaneously, I heard a heavy rain (not usual for Las Vegas.) I wasn’t afraid, and didn’t grab my gun for fear of intruders, as I immediately thought he was reacting to the rain.

As my head cleared, I realized that in their whole life, they were born April 1, they have never heard or seen rain. I hurried downstairs. He was damn near howling. I spoke gently to them, and suggested that we go out and see what this rain business was all about. I opened their pen and the back door. They normally rush out when I open that door. At that time (the rain was coming down hard) they rushed to the door, both stopped and slowly started backing up. I picked up Mr. Re and walked outside, staying under the canopy that covers my patio. Raise hesitantly followed. They watched and listened to the rain. Within minutes, the downpour had slowed to sprinkles. I put him down and walked out into the yard. They followed. They began to try and look up at what was coming out of the sky, bite it, taste it, run in it, and enjoy this new experience. What a joy to watch these two little creatures discover “life.”

A Book Review:
Sally, from Utah, read Bette’s book (see blog of July 18.) She liked it so much that she ordered 10 for gifts. This is a book review from her: Have gotten great response on Bette’s book. My neighbor girl loved it and thought girls from ages 10–13 would particularly enjoy it. All adult responses very positive, as well—“so clever,” “well-written,” “loved the illustrations,” etc.
