August 11, 2010 – Henderson, NV – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District applauded the announcement today that Nevada will receive an additional $34 million through the Hardest Hit Fund to help address the foreclosure crisis in the state by assisting homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments due to unemployment. Titus called on the Obama administration to do more to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure, leading to the announcement of the Hardest Hit fund during the President’s visit to Las Vegas in February.
"District Three has been ground zero for the housing crisis and families in Southern Nevada have been hit hardest," Congresswoman Titus said. "This additional funding that is targeted at homeowners who have lost their job as a result of the deepest recession in a generation is much needed. I have impressed upon the Obama administration the importance of addressing this crisis and how critical this effort is to Nevada's families and our larger effort to turn our economy around."
The $34 million is in addition to $102.8 million that was previously announced for Nevada. These funds for 17 states with unemployment at or above the national average over the past 12 months will provide temporary assistance to eligible homeowners to help them pay their mortgage while they seek re-employment, additional employment, or undertake job training.
August 10, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a lease for a new veterans’ clinic in Las Vegas. The clinic will be located at the corner of Charleston Boulevard and Arden Street.
“Today’s announcement is a critical step in the right direction that brings us closer to our goal of providing quality care that is convenient for Southern Nevada’s veterans,” Congresswoman Titus said. “Our veterans have earned the health care they need through their brave service to our country, and it is important that this care is accessible to veterans across Southern Nevada. This new facility will provide veterans with a range of services including mental health, primary, and specialty care.”
The Northeast Community-Based Outpatient Clinic acquisition is part of the relocation and expansion of medical services for veterans in Southern Nevada and is one of four clinics that will be built throughout the valley. The clinics will support the primary care and mental health outpatient workload of the VA Southern Nevada Health Care System.
August 10, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District voted today to support legislation to save teachers’ jobs and support Nevada’s most vulnerable through funding for the state’s Medicaid program. The Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act, which is fully paid for and will reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion over ten years, closes loopholes that allow corporations to ship American jobs overseas.
“With Nevada facing significant budget shortfalls, these funds, which are only for teachers and Medicaid, will help fill the gaps, keeping 1,400 teachers in the classroom and supporting the state’s most vulnerable citizens,” Congresswoman Titus said. “With the state having already accounted for this Medicaid money in its budget, failure to secure these funds would have dealt a serious blow to Nevada resulting in cuts to vital services and teacher layoffs. In addition, this bill will decrease the deficit while promoting job growth at home by ending tax loopholes for companies that ship jobs overseas.”
August 10, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Dina Titus of Nevada’s Third District released the following statement today after the House passed the 2010 Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations bill by voice vote this morning, providing $600 million to address the threat of increased violence along the Southwest border. Titus, an original cosponsor of the legislation, sent a letter to House leaders last week, urging swift action on the bill.
“As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, protecting our country is a top priority, and securing the border with increased personnel and the latest technology is critical to that effort. Even though Nevada is not a border state, the impact of violence along the border has been felt in our community. It is critical that growing violence in Northern Mexico, accompanies by drugs and illegal arms, not be allowed to flow through the border and up to Southern Nevada. By hiring 1,000 new Border Patrol agents and 250 new Customs and Border Protection agents and investing in unmanned drones to patrol the border region, we are providing the resources we need to make our community safer.”
