Berkley Welcomes $2 Million In Recovery Act Funding To Green Stella Fleming Towers

*** Retrofits Will Create Jobs in Southern Nevada, Deliver Long-Term Savings on Energy Costs for Residents ***

August 19, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today joined officials with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Monsignor Leary of Catholic Charities, and Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian in welcoming the delivery of $2 million in Recovery Act funding for improvements at Stella Fleming Towers in Las Vegas that will make the complex and its 115 units more environmentally friendly and increase energy efficiency, producing savings for residents.

“This $2 million Recovery Act funding is creating jobs in Southern Nevada and the improvements being made at Stella Fleming Towers will deliver long-term savings for residents on their energy costs. Green retrofits lower energy bills, reduce water use and improve air quality and that’s good for our community, good for the environment and great for the residents who call Stella Fleming Towers home,” said Berkley.

Funding from the federal Green Retrofit Program is being utilized to renovate and upgrade affordable apartments in Nevada and across the nation, creating jobs and delivering savings for residents. The program funds upgrades that reduce energy costs, cut water consumption, and improve indoor air quality.

The Green Retrofit Program is designed to create thousands of green jobs as workers retrofit older federally assisted multi-family apartment developments with the next generation of energy efficient technologies. Nevada is receiving a total of $2.7 million under the program included as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which has saved and created thousands of jobs across the Silver State. Also funded were green retrofits to the McFarland Apartments in Las Vegas and Yerington Manor in Yerington.

Grants and loans provided through the program help private landlords and property management companies cut heating and air conditioning costs through the use of efficient heating and cooling systems, and instillation of water-saving faucets and toilets. Funds are awarded to owners of HUD-assisted housing projects and can be used for a wide range of retrofit activities, ranging from windows and doors to solar panels and geothermal installation.

Berkley: Happy 75th Birthday Social Security

*** Congresswoman Pledges to Protect System for Americans of All Generations ***

August 13, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today marked the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Social Security system. On Saturday, Berkley will celebrate the program’s 75th “birthday” at an event in Las Vegas with the Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans. The Congresswoman has pledged to Nevadans to protect this vital program which provides support for seniors, the disabled, widows and widowers and children who have lost a parent. Berkley released the following statement in recognition of Social Security’s importance and the program’s 75 years of success:

“Seniors, the disabled and millions of other Americans rely on Social Security and they overwhelmingly oppose any effort to privatize a system that has delivered peace of mind for generations.

“Once again we are seeing the return of efforts to ‘privatize’ Social Security through ‘personalized’ accounts that would drain trillions of dollars from this vital program, risking its future. That would be a disaster for Nevada beneficiaries who would see deep cuts in the support they receive. I fought to stop privatization before and I will continue to oppose this risky scheme -- and that’s a promise I make to Americans of all generations.

“Working together, we can protect Social Security so it remains strong for retirees in their golden years, for disabled Americans, for children who have lost a parent and for spouses who have lost a husband or wife.

“I am committed to stopping any plan that would privatize Social Security and that would leave this important safety net for Nevadans vulnerable to the manipulation of Wall Street and global financial markets.”
