Ensign Addresses Nevada Military On The Importance Of Renewable Energy And Its Role In National Security

August 25, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Senator John Ensign today addressed the importance of renewable energy and its role in national security at a Forum hosted by the United States Air Force.

“Our [Nevada] geography and topography have made us a unique location for investment in renewable energy projects, especially solar energy,” said Ensign. “It is for these reasons that I have worked over the years to support the development of renewable energy in Nevada. Our military has a vital role to play in renewable energy development and I have been glad to see Nevada’s military installations taking a leading role in this endeavor.

“I am so proud to have some of the crown jewels of the Department of Defense infrastructure such as Nellis, Fallon, Creech and the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) located right here in Nevada. The NTTR is the largest in the Air Force Infrastructure. The training environment they afford our servicemen and women, as well as our allies, is not available anywhere else in the world. Once that environment is lost it is almost impossible to recover.

“There is a careful balance that must be struck in exploiting our renewable energy potential and preparing for war. Renewable energy development must be done as a partnership with our national security interests, not at the expense of them. The life and safety of our service members is and must continue to remain priority number one.”

Ensign: Nevada Will Play A Fundamental Role In Protecting American Citizens

August 24, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Senator John Ensign today commented on the official announcement to rename the Nevada Test Site (NTS) to the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The announcement was made at an event in Las Vegas hosted by the National Nuclear Security Administration.

“For many years Nevada has provided our country with reliable, modern weaponry and nuclear testing that has played a vital role in the safety of our country,” said Ensign. “The renaming of the NTS to NNSS emphasizes the important new role Nevada will have in our national security and represents the culmination of the amendment that Senator Reid and I introduced last October. The new NNSS will notably strengthen our national security infrastructure by broadening the site’s operations and fully utilizing the secure and remote lands in our state.

“Nevada now has a fundamental role in protecting American citizens from nuclear threat and, more importantly, the trust and support from our government to take on such a tremendous responsibility.”

Senator Ensign and Senator Reid introduced an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 Defense Appropriations bill this past October that called for a significant expansion of the NTS and its responsibilities regarding treaty verification and nuclear weapon detection. A provision in the amendment also called for the NTS to be renamed to reflect its new responsibilities for national security.

Senator Ensign Hosts Rural Town Hall Meetings

Healthcare Law and Economy Top Concerns Among Nevadans

August 23, 2010 – Pioche, NV – Senator John Ensign today held town hall meetings in Alamo, Caliente and Pioche to speak with Nevadans about the pressing issues facing our state; the new healthcare law and the economy were among their top concerns.

"It's so important for me that, when the Senate is in recess, I travel throughout the state to hear directly from Nevadans on what their concerns are and what they want me to fight for in Washington," said Ensign. "Today's town halls reiterated how unhappy many Nevadans are with Washington. With questions centering on how quickly Congress can act to repeal the new healthcare law and how Congress is not focusing on fixing the economy, it's clear to me that Nevadans are tired of Washington's mindset of 'my way or the highway'. The people that I met with today want Congress to stop spending away our country's future and want the government to stop interfering in their lives; this is what I will continue to fight for back in D.C."

Senator Ensign will be traveling throughout the state and meeting with Nevadans until the Senate resumes session on September 13, 2010.

Ensign: Washington Policies Not Helping Nevada Unemployment

August 20, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV – Senator John Ensign today addressed Nevada's new record-high unemployment rate of 14.3%.

"The newest unemployment numbers for Nevada, 14.3%, truly underscore that the policies of the Administration and Democrats in Congress are not working," said Ensign. "Instead of focusing on incentivizing job creation in the private sector and helping small business, Washington is spending and spending away the future of our country. It's time for the Democrats to retire their message that their stimulus bills and spending measures are helping our country because Nevadans know better."

Statewide unemployment numbers jumped to 14.3% and Las Vegas' unemployment rate surged to 14.8%.
