Sabrina Mercadante Appointed As City Of Henderson City Clerk

September 9, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The city of Henderson Mayor and City Council appointed Sabrina Mercadante as City Clerk at the September 7 city council meeting. Sabrina has served as Acting City Clerk since the retirement of Monica Martinez Simmons after 30 years of service to the community. Mercadante was sworn into office by Mayor Andy Hafen.

As City Clerk, Mercadante is responsible for the administration of the city’s voter/election services, local legislative and U.S. Passport processes, and historical records preservation. She will earn $135,000 a year.

“Sabrina has shown a great ability to lead the City Clerk’s office,” said Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen. “She brings years of experience and is dedicated to providing the highest quality service to our community. Sabrina will add a fresh perspective to her responsibilities and I believe she will lead the department to new levels of excellence. I look forward to working with her in her new role.”

Mercadante joined the city of Henderson in June 2000 as the city’s Archives and Records Administrator. She was promoted to Manager of Council and Commission Services in 2008 and appointed as Acting City Clerk in July 2010.

“I am honored to be appointed as city clerk for the community I have called home all my life,” Mercadante said. “I’m proud to lead a team of such skilled and talented professionals. I will work hard to maintain the department’s tradition of providing the highest quality of service to the citizens and visitors of Henderson.”

Mercadante earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. She has completed three Nevada Municipal Clerks Institutes as well as the city of Henderson Leadership Program, Phase I.

An active member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC), Sabrina has earned the Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation. She has been an active member of the Association of Records Managers (ARMA) since 1986 and was elected President of the Silver State ARMA Chapter in 2004. Sabrina was appointed by Governor Kenny Guinn to the Nevada State Historical Records Advisory Board to serve from 2003 to 2006 and reappointed by Governor Jim Gibbons to serve from 2006 to 2012.

Mercadante sits on the Board of Directors for S.A.F.E House, a non-profit shelter for victims of domestic violence.



Free College Application and Scholarship Workshop Oct. 5 and Oct. 6

September 9, 2010 – Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson Blue Ribbon Commission is hosting a college application and scholarship workshop from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 and Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Rd. The free workshop is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Parents and teens are asked to RSVP before Sept. 30 by calling 267-4016, but walk-ins are welcome if space is available. Students who RSVP before Sept. 30 will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.

Teens and parents will learn how to write a powerful resume; how to craft a cover letter that gets noticed, and how to prepare an accurate college application. Topics will also include effective scholarship search strategies and how to complete scholarship application forms. One-on-one assistance will be available.

The presenters include two members of the Blue Ribbon Commission who are dedicated to working with students. Dr. Teddy Osantowski is a published author and former college professor at Prairie State College (Illinois) and adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Johnnie Williams III is a nationally recognized youth activist, author and motivational speaker.

“Today, more than ever, teens and their parents need to know how to navigate the college application and scholarship process,” said Kurt Williams, Recreation Services manager, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “With everyone’s budget being so tight these days, families must take advantage of every available resource, and that’s what this workshop is designed to help them do.”

The Henderson Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity (Blue Ribbon Commission) reviews issues concerning excellence in education and opportunities for the development of youth in local communities and formulates recommendations to enhance the quality of life for all youth within the City.
