The
organization Rainbow Nation is a non-profit group that is trying to build a
bridge between people’s race and ethnicity through music. The man
spearheading these efforts is Gary Levine, best known in the Las Vegas
community as Oliver Walrus.
Levine
was owner and deejay of Bogey’s Nightclub for several years and has worked
on commercial productions. Now at 59, he is embarking on his biggest
production of all, an international show set right here in Las Vegas. The
event will feature music and dance from cultures around the world.
“The
goal is to bring people together with unity and harmony so they can be proud
of who they are, and share their cultures with others,” Levine said.
The
show is being planned out now, but Levine and his Executive Director of
Rainbow Nation, Sean D. Gay explained the structure of the show.
“There
will be a couple stages set up with movie screens showing the culture being
introduced in ritual dance and song. Then the live performance will begin
and each ethnicity from African, Asian, Native American, Caucasian, and
Latin will give a live presentation,” Levine said.
Rainbow Nation also hopes to get guest performances from some of today’s
mainstream musical acts for the show. “We are aiming the show towards kids
four years old to 12,” Gay said. “At the finale of the event we’ll have
everyone involved come out and sing unity songs together,” he added.
The
show will also feature cartoon characters created by Levine to help teach
children about tolerance. The names of these characters are Shake,
Rattle, Roll, and Rock. Together they form a four-member band. Levine
hopes the characters will grow in popularity so elementary schools will use
them during assemblies.
Levine
and Gay are in the process of finding financial support for the show, and
with Roger O. Flores of Kingdom Communications signed on as executive
producer of the show things are looking up. Levine said in conclusion,
“Everybody on the face of this Earth is linked by just five colors, and when
they leave the show people will have a sense of value and appreciation for
each other.”
