At its national conference in
Indianapolis, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America named the board of
directors of the Southern Nevada agency as 2006 Board of the Year.
Agency boards were judged by national
staff, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Nationwide Leadership Council
(staff and board members from each region), and the five members of
Big Brothers Big Sisters Agency Development staff. The award was
based on a number of key factors including: success in fundraising,
governance, growth in revenue, growth in matches (pairings of children
with volunteer mentors), partnership development, and support of other
BBBS agencies.
The board is specifically commended for
its diversity (ethnicity, age, gender, skill sets, professions, etc.),
its strong dedication to partnerships and collaborations, and a
seamless transition to a new CEO.
“To receive such a prestigious honor on a
national level is truly a tribute to the passion and commitment of
such a diverse and dynamic board of directors as well as the
tremendous support and dedication of the talented BBBSSN staff. The
combined efforts of these two groups has afforded us the opportunity
to fulfill our mission in creating mentoring relationships and enhance
the lives of the children of Southern Nevada,” says board chairman,
Rick McGough.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern
Nevada board of directors’ fundraising success means that the agency
can continue to pursue aggressive growth goals in number of kids
served. The board believes that the agency can grow to serve 1,500
children. They are confident that the right staff and community
volunteers are in place to make it happen. In the past year and a
half, the number of children on the waiting list for mentors has
decreased from 179 to approximately 27.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern
Nevada has served the Las Vegas Valley for over 30 years helping
