Senator John Ensign

Looking Ahead to 2007

It was an honor to be re-elected to the United States Senate by the voters of Nevada.  I am looking forward to beginning a new session of Congress, continuing my work on four very important committees, and taking on new challenges as I step into a leadership role.

I have been reappointed to four committees for the next session of Congress: Armed Services; Budget; Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Veterans Affairs.  These committees shape policies for our national security; economic competitiveness, keeping our promise to veterans and bringing fiscal discipline back to government.  These committees oversee policies that are critical to Nevadans, and they reflect the issues important to our state

Taking over the helm as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is a huge responsibility but something I am incredibly excited to take on.  The NRSC is responsible for funding and recruiting candidates for the U.S. Senate across the country.  What happens over the next two years will deeply impact the future of our party and the face of the United States Senate.  I am honored and grateful to have the confidence of my colleagues as I take on this challenge.

I have assembled a strong and proven team to help me in this new position.  My Chief of Staff, Scott Bensing, has accepted the job of NRSC Executive Director.  Political consultant Mike Slanker will be Political Director of the NRSC, and his wife and business partner, Lindsey, will be NRSC Finance Director.

In my senatorial office, my longtime Deputy Chief of Staff John Lopez has been promoted to Chief of Staff.  John is a native of Reno and has served me in various roles for more than a decade.  Las Vegan Doug Hampton will serve as my Administrative Assistant.  Doug previously served as Manager of Conservation for Nevada Power in Las Vegas and will work primarily out of my Washington office.

I am, as always, very grateful for the talented and dedicated people around me.  I know they will meet the challenges of their new roles with their usual professionalism and excellence.  I look forward to the coming year and to continuing to make a difference for our great state.  Best wishes to my fellow Nevadans for a happy, healthy and successful New Year.
