Freestanding Sign Codes Updated For Downtown Las Vegas

The Downtown Casino and the Downtown Entertainment Overlay Districts, which previously prohibited free-standing signage, now offer greater flexibility for businesses.  The Las Vegas City Council amended the code to allow for signs that contribute to an identity program or directional way-finding system for their respective district.

Proposed signs will still have to be approved by the existing design review committee, made up of Planning Commissioners and city staff, and will be subject to applicable design criteria. This administrative procedure is consistent with existing procedures.

Specified historic signs or those within the Neon Museum collection remain exempt.

“We are constantly working on improving service and allowing for flexibility and creativity by our customers,” said Margo Wheeler, director of the Planning and Development Department and an American Institute Certified Planner. “While we plan and implement the city’s downtown vision, we also review the processes and procedures we have on the books for consistency and ease of use.”

The revised code may be found in Title 19.06.100 (D) and 19.06.120 (E) under the laws and codes section of the city’s Web site, www.lasvegasnevada.gov
