2007 marks the
18th time that Las Vegas Sports Committee has served as host to the
United Stated National Championships. The Championships are truly
the proving ground for America's greatest Olympic wrestling stars in
men's Freestyle and Greco-Roman along with women's Freestyle. This
event has proven to be the foundation for U.S. success on the
international level. Each year the tournament plays an important
role in determining which athletes compete on the U.S. Olympic and
World Teams. April 4-7, 2007 marks the date the Las Vegas Sports
Committee will bring to Las Vegas over 2,000 athletes, 1500 coaches
and officials, 300 volunteers and 15,000 spectators over the four
day event. Each year the US National Championships is aired on CSTV.
The event is scheduled to be aired on a taped delay and will
possibly be shown additional times throughout the year on an as need
basis.
Many members
of the U.S. wrestling team that represented the USA in Athens will
be back to defend their titles. Over 100 athletes have competed in
Las Vegas and have gone on to represent the USA at five Olympics and
ten World Championships.
The United
States National Wrestling Championships have also been a showcase
for other talented athletes. The U.S. FILA Junior Nationals (ages
18 to 21) will be held alongside the Senior Championships. FILA
junior wrestlers make up the younger college athletes that are still
improving their skills for future Olympic teams.
Another
highlight is the Western Junior Regional Championship. This event,
the largest Junior Regional tournament in the nation, features
approximately 1,000 top high-school age wrestlers from across the
nation, battling in Freestyle and Greco-Roman.
