What another incredible weather year for Las Vegasand for the whole world! While the variety of Mother Nature's 2005 local offerings may not seem all that memorable, perhaps I can jog a few cells loose with this quick look back at some of the highlights:
JANUARY
SNOW! Many neighborhoods got up to 4 inches on the 7th, a day that started with scattered showers that slowly turned to snowflakes as the mid-morning temp dropped. Since no snow was measured at McCarran that day, the history books only show the day with close to a quarter inch of rain.
FEBRUARY
Fourth wettest February in Las Vegas history with 2.45" measured over 8 days throughout the month.
MARCH
Windy, with eight days recording gusts of 30 mph or higher, including the 22nd with a gust of 43 mph.
APRIL/MAY
Not too much to write home about with less than a tenth of an inch of rain in April (.06") and none in May. But another couple of windy days: 43 mph gust on April 8th and a 52 mph gust on May 16th.
JUNE
A somewhat late start to triple digits, with the first 100 degree day of the year on the 14th (103). The latest date for triple digits to start here was the 30th of June back in 1965.
JULY
On the 19th a tie for the all-time highest temp ever recorded here at 117 (which hadn't happened since July 24th 1942). July 2005 did see the setting of a new all-time record for the warmest ever overnight low: 95, which also occurred on the 19th.
AUGUST
One rainy day, the 14th, with just over a quarter of an inch recorded at the airport (.26"), but, wow, the southern and western sections of the valley was rocked with close to an inch of rain that day, with lots of flooded streets that, for the most part, cleared out overnight.
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
September was dry with just a few windy days, but it was the wettest October ever recorded in Las Vegas with close to an inch and a half of rain (1.45") spread over two days, the 17th and 18th.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER
Fairly mild, although the morning low dropped to 38 on November 30th, with the official low down to 30 on December 16th and 17th, marking the coldest days of the year (many neighborhoods saw frosty temps in the mid and upper 20s on several chilly December mornings).
Not counting whatever sprinkles hit the official rain bucket on December 31st, the year ended with 7.36" of rain at McCarran, good enough for 6th place on the list of the 10 wettest years ever recorded here.
So, yes, we've had our share of weather here. But, obviously, there's no comparing the beauty of our part of the Desert Southwest with the devastating weather near to us in California (massive Spring and some Summer flooding and mudslides, not to mention lightning-sparked wildfires). And the record-breaking tragedies of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will hopefully never be matched again.
Happy New Year!
