Ben is a happy young
fellow of 81 years with a charismatic personality. He can be seen at
the Fabulous Freddie’s Carwash on Charleston and Fort Apache, greeting
and shaking hands with customers and talking about old times in the
fight game. He’s quite a P R guy. There are pictures of him on a large
poster with many champions outside the main entrance to the carwash. He
sparred with the greats… heavy weight champion Sonny Liston, Jersey Joe
Walcott, Essard Charles and Rocky Marciano to name a few. He started
out as the light heavy weight champion in the Navy of the Aleutian
Islands. He went on to have a pro career and fought Archie Moore
twice. As a sparring partner, he traveled with Joe Louis and Sugar Ray
Robinson along with the legendary referee Arthur Donavon. There are so
many more stories to tell about his exciting career that we will bring
to you in the up coming months.
Oh, by the way...
Friday night at the Orleans, I checked out Tye Fields and Bruce Seldon
heavy weight fights. It was a travesty… I’ve never seen a fight with an
ex- champion so terribly out of shape, never through one punch, I’ll
take it back, he through one punch in the second round and missed by ten
feet. The rest of the time he covered up, not trying to throw a punch
and went down with a shot to the body. The second time he went down
with a shot to the body and a left to the head that missed. He
got up at the count of five, and the referee stopped the fight. Bruce
Seldon, do us a favor, don’t fight again…
Don’t forget the heavy weight championship fight between Vitali
Klitschko and Hasim Rahman at the Thomas and Mack on November 12th.
This may be Rahman’s last shot at a title.
Also, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is fighting Sharmba Mitchell on November 19th
in Portland Ore. The world’s best boxer has to get a major fight in
2006.
Finally, in December watch for my interview with an outstanding up and
coming heavy weight.
