Our great nation recently
celebrated the 60th anniversary of VE and VJ day, as well as
America’s triumph over the axis powers of World War II. Over 300,000
service men and women lost their lives on the battlefields of Europe and the
Pacific. In honor of those brave Americans and all those that have served
or are presently serving in our Armed Forces, I would like to invite
Southern Nevadans to participate in the Veterans History Project.
The
Veterans History Project is administered through the Library of Congress’s
American Folklife Center. Currently, 19 million Americans are veterans of
our Armed Forces, and every day 1,600 of them pass away. According to the
Department of Veterans Affairs we are losing 1,000 WWII vets per day, and by
2020 they will only make up 1% of the nations veterans population.
Motivated by the urgent need to collect the stories and experiences of war
veterans while they are still among us, Congress created the Veterans
History Project, which covers World War I, World War II, the Korean,
Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars.
The
Veterans History Project includes the men and women who participated in
those wars, and documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support
staff, and war industry workers as well.
The
great state of Nevada is home to 248,000 veterans, with 165,000 living in
Southern Nevada. As a member of Congress, I am creating community
partnerships with the goal of preserving the stories of Nevada’s veterans.
If
you would like to participate in this important project please contact my
Washington, DC, or Henderson, Nevada office for more information. By
working together we can ensure that future generations of Americans
appreciate the sacrifices of the generations before them.
