ROYCE GRACIE WHO actually dominated the UFC in its infancy stages in the mid-'90s was the man no one could beat. He had that magic about him through jujitsu by beating his opponents by submission. Those days however were not the same. There was more martial arts used during those times. Today, anything goes in the UFC short of castration. Well not really. But elbows to the eyes and those punches to the head with leather gloves has certainly done a lot of damage in the octagon. Gracie has been inactive for a few years, yet made it seem like he could come back and take the title. Well he found out differently when he faced a strong young Matt Hughes, the UFC World Welterweight Champion, who took Gracie to the mat and within 4:39 of the opening round TKO'ed him. Hughes dominated Gracie with blows to the face and head that had the referee stop the fight. The event which was held at the Staple Center was titled UFC 60 and had an attendance of some 20,000 UFC fans.
Like all things in life, once you're champion and retire from the game, things change. Royce Gracie had his day, but it is a new age with fighters like Matt Hughes.
