When it
comes to food, I will take quantity over quality every time. I
think most of the high-end Las Vegas restaurants are over priced
and haughty, the staff is arrogant 20 year olds, that act like
they own the place, and it’s the first time you’ve been to a
restaurant. Instead of reviewing one restaurant, I thought I
would compare three popular Las Vegas restaurants, one original
Vegas, two transplants. Hugo’s Cellar in the Four Queens is an
old Las Vegas standard, with a unique style and good food.
Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion is a clone of a tourist restaurant in
Hawaii. Lawry’s The Prime Rib is an updated copy of an old,
very popular LA restaurant. |

Hugo’s Cellar:
This was my odds-on favorite to win the competition. The first time
I dined at Hugo’s was 20 years ago, and I was impressed. Every lady
received a red rose; the table had bottled water at No charge, and a
wonderful breadbasket, just for starters. Today they still have the
rose and water, but the bread stinks. They serve a complete dinner,
and their claim to fame is preparing a Caesar salad tableside.
Once wonderful, now the salad was tasteless, for an entrée I had
Lamb Chops, they were also tasteless, and I had to ask for Mint
Jelly. Over all, if you are downtown, it’s not a bad place to eat,
be prepared to pay $60.00 per person.
Roy’s
Hawaiian Fusion:
This is one of
those Hip-Fashion restaurants opening all over Las
Vegas; I always wanted to try it, what a big mistake. The place is
dark and the type on the menu is so small, I needed the waitress to
read the entrées. I don’t like pushy waitresses and this one was
the pushiest, she repeatedly came to our table with drink,
appetizer, and desert suggestions. I had to tell her not bother us
while we were eating. The menu was A La Carte; I ordered Meatloaf
and a Caesar salad, for $29.00. Both were bad, my only thought, I
wanted $20.00 change. Drive by Roy’s, do not stop, and remember,
you have been warned.

Lawry’s
The Prime Rib: All
the time I lived in LA, I don’t remember eating at Lawry’s. As
we walked in I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful décor,
fluffy furnishings, and pictures of the history of Lawry’s lined
the walls. For dinner we sat in a over stuffed red velvet
booth. The waitress was dressed like a little Dutch Girl,
and I made the comment her outfit reminded me of an old LA
coffee shop, Van de Camps. |

She said
Walter Van de Camp started both restaurants, although with Lawry’s
he had a partner, Lawrence Frank. Is that where they got the name
Lawry’s? Lawry’s serves a complete dinner, salad, mashed potatoes
and a choice five sizes of Prime Rib, from small to the entire cow.
I had the medium size, Lawry’s cut for $33.00. Everything was
delicious, and all for four bucks more than that crappy meal at
Roy’s.

After eating all this food, I’m a few pounds heavier; maybe
the Boss should have me review three athletic clubs. No, I
love to eat, I hate to exercise.
