Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southern Nevada – A Big Win for Kids

Big Brothers and Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States.  The organization recently had a gala event at Red Rock Casino where Dave Courvoisier of Channel 8 graciously hosted the dinner. It truly was a lovely evening with a mid eastern summer theme.

The importance of events such as this one at Red Rock allows each agency to expand their mentoring programs.  One hundred and fifty agencies across the country provide direct service to over 23,000 children by matching them to adult volunteers in quality mentoring situations.  In fact, each adult has to go through an in depth background check before they are allowed to mentor a child.

National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brother and Big Sister mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives.  Adults who participate in the program give little brother and sister many advantages especially if a single parent brings them up. First, more children are confident in their schoolwork performance from ages 6 through 18.  Second, they are able to get along much better with their families.  Forty six percent are less likely to begin to use illegal drugs and 27 percent less likely to use alcohol and 52 percent less likely to skip school.  For more information on Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Nevada, call (702) 222-9000.
