FROM OCTOBER 1 through November 7, the Lied Discovery Children's Museum will create and exhibit several ofrendas (altars) and will present several activities as part of its participation in the festivities of Los Dias de los Muertos, or the Days of the Dead. The main event will be held on Saturday, October 28th with performances and sugar skull decorating.
A little somber? Not at all! Los Dias de los Muertos offers an annual opportunity for families to celebrate the memories of relatives and friends through special preparations. For this special reunion, family and friends prepare gravesites and ofrendas with colorful cloths, streamers, candles, flowers, photographs, richly decorated pan de muertos (bread of the dead), skull-shaped sugar-sweets, and paper mâché skeletons.
The series is sponsored by a grant from Target Stores. "These are great opportunities for children to learn how other cultures celebrate life and deal with death," states Museum spokesperson, Wendy Adams.
