The Circuit™ Week In Review

Happy Birthday to Us!

Honestly, I don't know if its the change of seasons, the nearness of the holidays, or the number of nightclubs celebrating one, two, and three year anniversaries but I'm feeling a little nostalgic! Wait, it could also be the fact that this Tuesday, October 24th is the two-year anniversary of The Circuit! That's right, y'all. For 104 weeks I've gotten to connect with you in this fashion, reporting all the news that's fit to print and some that probably isn't but still did just for giggles. Well, 102 weeks actually thanks to a bad connection in Rome and one crazy week working on the LV Weekly's club issue, but who's counting? The Circuit's been written in Baltimore, Philly, New York, Miami, LA, Reno, Denver, Vail, Park City, Mt. Charleston, and Italy (twice!); in trains, planes, and automobiles; in coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and by pools; on kitchen tables and coffee tables. The news reported has been whispered, shouted, mouthed, texted in, emailed in, and sometimes even phoned in (ha!). Suffice it to say, I've never worked so hard on anything in my life. So, I thank you for your time, your humor, and your faith. I couldn't have done it without you and I wouldn't have any of this if not for you. So, in the near future, I'll be announcing a little party I want to throw not to honor The Circuit (well, maybe just a bit) but to thank you in Circuit style!

But let us dispense with the mush. This Monday night, October 16th, the Lakers continued their youth foundation weekend with a soiree by the Mirage pool. The usual media suspects buzzed around the free food and open bar but just a hop, skip, and a machete's swipe through the Mirage's palm tree faux-rest was the real party at Bare adult pool. There, Kobe and the gang greeted fans who also bid on valuable sports memorabilia. Yes, even small children were passed forward to have their pic snapped with the tall stars. Wednesday night I got my "drink on" with CityLife's brilliant food critic Al Mancini as his guest at Agave restaurant for a Casa Noble Tequila tasting. Believe it or not, the Casa Noble Crystal, Reposado, and Anejo paired nicely with the ceviche, sopas, lamb, and especially the heavenly papaya sorbet. I think we each floated home that night!

Red Square hosted a nice big gathering of Cornell Hotel Alums Thursday evening in honor of Zinck's Night, the Cornell holiday notorious for getting alumni of all ages drunk and hitting on each other. And I got a Cornell beer cozy! Good thing cuz I drink beer so seldom I would hate for the poor beer to get all uncomfortable. One dirty martini with bleu cheese-stuffed olives later and we were out the door, and on to the Jean Paul Gaultier boutique at the Wynn's Esplanade shops for the swank launch of JPG's new fragrance Gaultier 2 hosted by Cornell's own Jade Bailey. How does it smell? Kind of like a cross between Joop and Angel but find me this week and gimme a whiff. I'll either be wearing that or Gene Simmon's new KISS Her perfume. I like them both so much I can't decide! When the champagne and mini chocolate eclairs were gone (much of my own doing) we moved the show over to Lure for the afterparty for more perfume and more champagne! I later arrived solo to Ghostbar just moments after Chris Clouse took the stage. Taking in the evening's rockin' performance were Jack Colton, Tracy Lee, Chad Saunders, DJ Shift, Priti Patel, Michael Tomes, Michael Fuller, Rock 'n Roll Wine's Chris Hammond and Sonny Barton, and DJ Five. Clouse and DJ Solomon were there celebrating the release of Clouse's new CD Chimera. Buy it! (http://cdbaby.com/cd/clouse3)

The Hofbrauhaus was kickin' Friday night, mid-Oktoberfest as we are. Zach Conine was celebrating his birthday with friends and a particularly yummy cake sporting a scary picture of Conine as Luke Skywalker. Ever seen a grey cake before? Trust me, scary! Later that night I ventured into old territory, stopping by Drai's for some old school afterhours action with a comprehensive cast of industry regulars. Not quite the same crowd as in the olden days (meaning like, 3 years ago for me) but still fun and exciting.

Midtown Gordie Brown gave a preview performance Saturday night at the Venetian, amusing a full house with his musical comedy and, might I add, a spot-on Jack Nicholson impression. Being so close to Tao, I found it hard not to stop in for the hot 'n sour soup. Pauly Shore was just arriving for his afterparty when I was heading out. The evening would have continued but for the flat I somehow caught between the time I dropped my car off at valet and the time I picked it up. Awesome! But Sunday night at Body English more than made up for the toy tire on my car. English 101 celebrated those who cover the serious and demanding Vegas nightlife beat. In our booth overlooking the dance floor, the Weekly's Martin Stein and his wife Biana, CityLife's Kevin Capp, 944's Matt Kelemen, LVM's Justin Jimenez, and myself partied like college kids to the sounds of DJ Homicide. Frequent trips were also made down to the Parlor where Strip LV Magazine's Tiffany Masters was celebrating her birthday and where former Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan was partying to the tunes of DJ Jack Lafleur.

End of the ICE age... Almost as quickly as one can report the news, so does it change. Sitting as I am in the waiting room at Just Breaks, I hear that despite the attempts by ICE Las Vegas to stay open a little longer, if not right up until the last day of March when the property would have to be vacated, ICE has for the second time announced that Saturday night will be its last. Friends, family and anyone who has ever passed a pleasant evening within those black, matte walls--you are all invited down for the grand closing party with beloved resident Faarsheed and guest Infected Mushroom (jeez...). The club will likely be kept open till noon the next day to insure that everyone gets to say their goodbyes and show their respects. Says ICE's Director of VIP Services, Brian Klimaski, "With a heavy heart I’m sorry to say that ICE will be closing after this Saturday’s Halloween Party. There will be an open bar for our personal guests from 4am until the liquor is gone. Infected Mushroom will be performing from 1-4am then Faarsheed, Mark Styles, and Bob Shindelar should be taking over. You never know who will show…" RIP ICE 2003 – 2006

The man's in demand... Word must be getting out that Jack Lafleur uses grass-roots efforts to keep the Parlor at Body English packed every Monday night. Jack jumps behind the decks and gives the loyal industry crowds a bit of love in his own unique style. The Fleur and DJ AM have been hired to spin at the birthday party of Suzanne Gore (ex-Wife of Depeche Mode's Martin Gore) this Wednesday in Santa Barbara.

Tempering bad news with good... The team that brought you most of those crazy nights at ICE--Zee Zandy, Brian Klimaski, and Josh Donaldson--invite you to Jet Nightclub to christen their new dedicated house night. The name continues to be tossed around ("This Is Our House" is where discussions have currently left off) but the line up and the intention is clear--house domination. Kicking off the new Thursday night party will be the legendary Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold with our very own Faarsheed on November 16th. So, as you see, there's two sides to every penny. Lucky for us! And as I mentioned in my article on Empire Ballroom this week, Gino LoPinto announced the Ballroom will be launching a new Thursday afterhours as well as some new prime time hours in the very near future, which makes for a nice Thursday night house music pairing of prime time and afterhours. And so the battle for Thursday rages on this Winter.

Lee's Wine Experience... Sunday November 5th is the 3rd annual Lee's Wine Experience brought to you by Lee's Discount Liquor and held at the Las Vegas Hilton from 3 to 8 p.m. This year, 104 suppliers will be pouring over 900 wines. Members of Lee's Wine Club will have access to a special VIP room, where they will be able to taste 40 of the finest wines from around the world--wines like Opus One, Caymus Special Select, Chateau Mouton Rothchild, Dom Perignon and much more. "The Bachelor", Andrew Firestone will be there as usual presenting wines from his own winery. There will also be a vodka bar, gin bar, brandy bar, tequila bar, whiskey bar and rum bar. Ed Mcmahon will also be in attendance promoting his own Mcmahons premium vodka. Tickets are only $40 in advance and $50 at the door; there are only 2000 tickets available. More info here. Look up the Greenup... Get a gander at the full-frontal Jimmy Greenup Experience (http://vegas.napkinnights.com/words/gdetail.php?id=38), as interviewed by Jack Colton, on NapkinNights.com. Aided by some very snazzy photography by Miss Tracy Lee, Colton is chipping away at his list of the 31 most influential people in Las Vegas nightlife. The dynamic duo have already snapped and spilled with promotrix and VIP host Kalika Moquin. Watch as they work their way through the remaining 29, including myself! Hey guys, just let me hit the gym first, ok?

One Killer party... The Killers' "hey, our album went gold" afterparty will get a few special guests Saturday night at Studio 54, namingly The Killers! Though that tiny detail is not being widely distributed, it's true so go party with your hometown boys while they're still naming albums after popular Vegas locales.

Shulman, burlesque-style... Vegas magazine's Michael Shulman still has every intention of getting burlesque-esque on an unsuspecting crowd (as reported last week) but the popular Diva Las Vegas columnist reports that the spectacle, in which he will sing Shirley Bassey's number "I'd Like To Hate Myself In The Morning (And Raise A Little Hell Tonight)", the November event will now be on a Wednesday night and will now be happening at Tangerine with live musicians!!!!

Motion Detector... Last Thursday, October 12th Tao Lounge manager Jeff Manno worked his final shift in the popular hot spot. Manno, a Cornell Grad and long-time friend, has since announced that he has joined the team at Red Carpet Entertainment. "We are the premier provider of nightlife and entertainment services in Las Vegas," says the newly hired General Manager, "We drive our business on personalized service." Manno says he had already made the decision to move away from operations and then had a "what am I waiting for" moment, and even considered moving back to California. "This company is for real, the people are really passionate about it," says Manno. "It’s gonna be interesting to say the least!

Wanna feel appreciated?... Cherry Nightclub at Red Rock Casino and Resort launched its new Salvation Thursdays last Thursday. It's an industry appreciation night featuring cutting-edge progressive house by DJ Josh Abrams. Says Cherry VIP host Chance McDaniel, "This is the beginning a new era at Cherry." O-PM is also beginning a new locals night on Wednesdays offering no cover all night with Nevada ID plus one comp drink ticket.

People Are Seeing... Stars!

Vegas is for freakish lovers... Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and his wife Suzette renewed their vows, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday, October 21st, after Snider's performance of Van Helsing's Curse at the Joint at the Hard Rock. The bride wore black as Penn Jillette officiated the touchy-freaky ceremony.

Britney, the next Pussycat Doll?... Britney Spears arrived at the Pussycat Dolls lounge around 11:30 pm Wednesday, October 18th, with one girlfriend just in time to catch the Dolls' last show of the evening. At the door she was asked for ID but told the bouncer she really didn’t want to show him. He said he had to see her ID to let her in, in accordance with Nevada gaming laws. Upon hearing that, she complied. The two ladies sat in the corner, beneath the PCD sign during the show and enjoyed Voss waters till they left at 1 a.m. A source adds, “Britney was very interested in the routines and the dance moves.” Hmmm, perhaps Mrs. Federline is thinking of making an appearance with the Pussycat Dolls as part of her reemergence into musical society? I bet she'd look pretty hot in that champagne glass!

Britney keeps us guessing... Brit's visit had my phone blowing up non-stop with sightings, non-sightings, corrections to sightings...this little lady really kept some people guessing. Not making too many of her usual moves, Brit traveled sans security this weekend, and kept a pretty low profile. Thursday afternoon Britney was reportedly spotted working out at the Canyon Ranch Spa and later that night she stopped by Tao just a little after 1 a.m. with one friend and two dancers. She drank Jack 'n Coke (that's my girl!) and took in the scene from one of Tao's private skyboxes. She even got a shout out from the DJ at around 2:15 a.m. which finally alerted many to the new mom's presence. Expect to see more and more of Mrs. B. Feddy as it is rumored that the hot mama will be recording her new album at the Studio at the Palms!

Paris gets her freak on... Miss Paris Hilton dined a deux with Mindfreak's Criss Angel at the Bellagio's Prime Steakhouse Sunday night. The two--along with Paris' new whatever, model James Neate--were also spotted hanging out at Jet Saturday night too. Hmmm. I'm not sure who I'm more worried about... Paris and Criss also visited Caramel and Body English Sunday night.

More... Actress and poker princess Shannon Elizabeth and Sex and the City's Willie Garson chatted it up about what else but poker at Bare for the Lakers Youth Foundation weekend while Director Penny Marshall cut her birthday cake with the Lakers' Lamar Odum ...At the same event, Kobe Bryant took pictures with fans, Odum signed a fan's cast, and Charlie O'Connell chatted up the ladies ...Randy Lund of the infamous "Dirty South" crew (they have not missed a Rehab Sunday in 3 years!) celebrated his birthday Thursday, October 19th at Tryst ...Former President Jimmy Carter and his son Jack Carter (Nevada's Democratic candidate for the United States Senate) stopped by PT's Gold on Friday, October 20th ...Elton John's entourage made a very special addition to their rider Saturday, immediately requesting that BARE Rum be delivered to Guy Savoy’s Restaurant at Caesars Palace from Henderson’s Khoury’s Fine Wine & Spirits.
