Sometimes Simple is Best

Playing in an International team tournament I picked up:

Kxx
AQJ9xxx
Void
Qxx

I opened 1 heart

A 1 Spade overcall on my left

2 Clubs by partner,

2 Spades on the right

It seems partner is short in spades and has a good club suit, so rather than bid around, I just bid what I thought I could probably make Six Hearts!!

The opening lead was the Ace of Diamonds and partner produced this dummy:

Void
10x
Jxxxx
AKJxxxx

You ruff the Diamond lead and??

Did you ruff a Spade in dummy and lead the 10 of Hearts for a finesse? Wrong!!

That will work only if Right Hand Opponent has Kx of Hearts or stiff K. That is what declarer at the other table did in 6H, and when the Heart King did not drop on the second round, they had to lose a trick to the Heart King and the Ace of spades later.

Did you find the winning play?

I simply led a low Heart to dummy’s 10. Now when the King won there was still a trump in dummy to handle a spade lead and I was able to claim the rest after pulling trump. It does no good for the K of Hearts to duck as I can then finesse trump on the way back and take all the tricks. On this one simple was best!  Just give them the trump King and you are home free.

The complete hand was:

Void
10x
Jxxxx
AKJxxx

Axxxx
Kxx
xxxx
xx

QJxxx

AKQxx

AQJ9xxx
Void
