My oh my...
how things have changed! More than 200 tables across a vast
conference center, most of those in action through the evening
hours. There was more money in play in one day than all the days of
the first THREE WSOP combined! Hell, there are
more dealers for this WSOP then there were players in all events for
the first three WSOPs and some of them can actually deal, however
most cannot, as you might expect, what with the explosion of poker
over the last few years. The reason of course is because there are
not enough qualified dealers to keep up with the plethora of new
card rooms opening across the country. Thank goodness they don't use
human dealers online.... but dealers are another story, and we will
for sure get to that in later articles. |

Trivia Question!
Who is the only poker dealer to win the WSOP?
Answer: Scotty
Nguyen.
|
That's right, Scotty was a
poker dealer at Harrah's and the Golden Nugget before entering
his first WSOP event in 1996. ($3000 No-Limit Hold'em) in which
he placed third. Scotty went on to win the main event in 1998,
one of four bracelets he has accumulated. Scotty assured me
(between greeting well wishers and signing autographs) that by
the end of 2006 WSOP he will have seven of the coveted
"wrist trophies."
When this
reporter asked the always personable Nguyen (a question I will
ask in all my "Legend" interviews), "You have made it
to the final table in a $10,000 buy-in Hold'em event, which nine
opponents would you NOT like to see at your table?"
|
 |
|
Scotty quickly answered "Nine
of me, no seriously, I would not want to see nine players that I
did not know, because the players that I've played with before
are easier to read and put on a hand."
That was the end of the
interview, as Scotty had to return to his seat in the $1500
Hold'em tournament. As he walked away, he gave me his familiar
"See ya later Baby!" |
