"Five Minutes with a Legend"

Mike Sexton, poker's most recent million dollar winner (bested a virtual who's who of No-Limit Hold-em's "best" in the 2006 WSOP opening event; the Tournament of Champions) granted me more than five minutes, what with the congratulatory hand shakes and autograph requests he received while we talked.
Mike is a well spoken southern gentleman  (from North Carolina) who's graciousness is matched only by his poker player proficiency.

Sexton came to Vegas in 1984 to play at the WSOP at Binion's and finished in the finals in two events, (6th in Pot-Limit Omaha and 5th in Stud 8 or better) and as they say "the rest is history"!

Mike is also known as the co-commentator, along with Vince Van Patten on the World Poker Tour. WPT along with Chris Moneymaker's storybook run to win the 2003 WSOP is what Mike believes helped poker's explosion in recent years.

Mike was astute enough to know what I meant when I asked him "Do you gamble at all?" (Pro poker players that beat the game month after month, or year after year, are NOT gambling!) He replied "Yes, I bet sports and gamble playing golf.

When not playing poker, Mike enjoys golfing and going to movies. He most enjoys realistic movies, like "Clear and Present Danger" and "Philadelphia". His favorite actor is Denzel Washington. Mike's favorite poker game is Pot-Limit Omaha (a Hustler's favorite poker game, my feelings!).

Mike believes (contrary to what this correspondent thinks) that watching the pros on TV, their starting hands and the way they play the hands does not hurt the real poker players. "Watching them on TV or in person helps the game" Mike stated.

Finally when put to the question "You have made it to the final table in a $10,000 buy-in Hold'em event, which nine opponents would you NOT like to see at your table?". After pondering for a couple of minutes, "Coming up with only nine is difficult" he said. Mike's nine are, Stu Unger, Doyle Bronson, Phil Hellmuth, Puggy Pearson, Johnny Chan, Chip Reese, Barry Goldstein, Treetop Strauss and David "Devilfish" Ulliott.

Thanks again Mike Sexton and congrats on your victory.
