"5 Minutes with a Legend"

Part 2

Jay started on the road to poker and business success by doing something most young poker players seldom do, invest a poker score in something other than another poker game. While a young man in the Army, Jay amassed $10,000 by playing poker, apparently already out classing his opponents (a situation it seems he has run into all the while since).

Soon after his discharge Jay took his $10,000 and a little more borrowed money and invested as a 25% partner in a beer distributorship in New York. He eventually became the youngest beer distributor in the U.S.

Early on, Jay conducting business and played poker as well, soon winning an average of $500 per week in private games, which was more than he took home in the early years of the beer business, soon Jay took time off from poker for a few years to devote his time fully to business.

When his business became successful it was back to poker full time. He has since sold his distributorship, but remains busy physically, playing tennis, swimming and running. He also tries to eat well (he mentioned how much he respects the life style of Cyndy Violette) and he stays active mentally (and financially healthy I might add,) by playing high limit poker online and occasionally in live games close to home at Foxwoods and Atlantic City, plus, of course, his yearly spring (until the last couple of years, now in the middle of summer) visits to the “Duel in the Desert”. Almost forgot, Jay also plays in the WPT events as well.

Another thing Jay does, (and I highly commend him and his wife for it) Jay and his wife are raising their now eleven year old grandson. I bet that keeps them both active (I know, I have a twelve year old grandson myself). Jay says “The boy is the joy of his life”!

But getting back to poker in this enjoyable, for this interviewer anyway, and I’m sure it was for Jay too as we told stories back and forth about the “good ole days”  and he told me stories about “Modern time Poker”.

His favorite poker game is Omaha Hi-Lo (the one he truly excels at) closely followed by No-Limit and Limit Hold-em.

When put to the question to list the nine players he would NOT like to see at a final $10,000 buy-in table, Jay listed, Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Gus Hansen, Dan Harrington, Erik Seidel, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein and Howard Lederer.

Then it was off again to the green felt battle fields for this poker solider of fortune.
