At the conclusion of Day 2B of the World Series of Poker, the field was narrowed down to 1159 players. This means that there are only 286 players to go until the bubble busts. The bubble is the last person that busts out before making the cash. However, last year’s bubble boy ended up receiving a free seat in this year’s World Series of Poker. There have been rumors of another prize for this year’s unlucky bubble winner. Some think it will be a seat at the 2007 World Series of Poker. My question is, since a prize is all but guaranteed for the person who busts the bubble, does that make the person who busts out before the bubble the true bubble buster? Last year the tournament staff devised a plan to overcome players intentionally slowing the game, so that other players might bust out and in turn increase their likelihood of making the money. The plan was that once the field was narrowed down to a certain amount of players, about 10 players over the “made the money” number, they would have each table play an equal number of hands. To accomplish this they would have each table play one hand and when a table had completed that hand the dealer was supposed to stand up. Once all the dealers on all the tables were standing, the next hand could be dealt. It was pitifully slow and yet an effective way of assuring fairness to the players. Regardless of who the bubble does bust on, Day 3 will most likely be the day the event comes down to the lucky 873 (or 874). Tension will be at its peak for the event, and just as last year, the buzz around the place will most likely be impossible to ignore.
