Say what? OK,
regifting is the newest holiday term for giving on low or no budget.
Here's the Wikipedia definition: the act of taking a gift that has
been received and giving it to somebody else in the guise of a new
gift. Here's my idea, let's regift all the love our families and
friends give us this year and bestow it on mere acquaintances, or
better yet, total strangers. And I have an excellent place to start,
your nearest assisted living community or nursing home. The elderly
need our love now, more than ever.
Holidays are
about nothing, if not memories of past celebrations. Mention
Christmas and those age old sugarplums start dancing in our heads.
It's the same for everyone, especially our senior citizens. Oh, what
memories and stories they have and oh, how they love to listen and
be listened to.
If that's not
regifting, I don't know what is. It's all about giving back, of
course. And what better way to give freely, both financially and
from the heart, than to give your time to someone who might not get
much company these days. Health issues notwithstanding, loneliness
is the often the worst thing people face in the winter of their
lives. I know it's the season for hustling and bustling and finding
time to breathe and shopping and wrapping and.. and.. and... But,
it's also the season to remember who's important. The answer:
Everyone, especially our elders.
They deserve a
gift from you. They deserve your company, your conversation, your
attention. After all, we've been given those gifts, it's time for a
little regifting!
So please,
please, please. visit a senior facility, if only for an hour. Talk
to the residents, they all have great stories to tell. Spread the
cheer of the season. You'll feel better about yourself and I
guarantee you'll make someone's day, week and possibly year.
